Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market
Bakewell Market Report 2023-01-02
The New Year for Bakewell Market started on the Bank Holiday Monday with a decent selection of stock on offer with only the store cattle section failing to attract a reasonable entry.
For all other sections numbers were within striking distance of normal.
To deal with the store cattle first. There were only 46 on offer, but there were sufficient buyers present to ensure a satisfactory trade. With no strong cattle on offer there were no headline figures but price levels were well up to the mark.
The 113 finished cattle sold on a tremendous trade with top figures of 313p and 312p and a maximum gross price of £2003.
The average for the 62 heifers which makes a useful yardstick was 258.1p.
A handy show of 81 OTM and feeding cows saw the best on offer to 219p/kg and top gross £1,780. The average looked good at 167.5p.
38 calves on offer with bulls to £290 and heifers £230.
Over in the sheep department there was plenty of trade for the 1,094 hoggs with top figures 328p/kg and £158.51 per head.
The SQQ average was a respectable 253.9p.
In the cull sheep department 225 head were sold with ewes to £229 to average a remarkable £118.11.

A new year and a super entry today with farmers wanting to get ‘back to business’ after the holiday break. Although today was a Bank Holiday all the buyers were at ringside looking to fill a wagon in anticipation of getting the abattoirs running on Tuesday. Trade therefore was hot from the word go with the best 8 over £2 and selling to a top of 219p for a 33-month-old heifer with the best cow at 215p for Jake Lyon, Flagg. Plenty of good cows 185-200p.

112 FINISHED CATTLE – overall average 253.5p/kg (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)
A tremendous entry of cattle today and trade excellent from the start to finish. All buyers operating and looking to fill up before work starts on Tuesday. There are plenty of speculations about where the trade is going with some commentators suggesting they could get dearer. My advice would be to only sell when they are ready and the only way to achieve their maximum value is on their feet in Bakewell Market. As ever, if you would like to speak to me with regard to trade or would like a confidential, no obligation farm visit, give me a call on 07801 530899.
