Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 09-01-2023

A tremendous turnout for the first ‘proper’ market of the New Year.

605 Cattle and 1,717 sheep in parade along with a tremendous line up of buyers which ensured a wonderful trade in all cattle sections.

Sheep do not enjoy the same level of demand and hogg prices were a shade easier than last week.

There was an on-site auction of land rovers and 4WD of which there are more details below.

The store & breeding cattle department had a catalogued entry of 320 head and had attracted a bumper crowd of buyers.  The result – prices well in excess of expectation and not enough cattle to go round.

The top prices tell the story with steers to £1600 and heifers £1500.  The few feeding bulls topped at £1130.

Over in the finished ring demand was also very strong with 145 cattle on offer.

Top prices 314p and £2170 per head.

Our regular barometer of trade, the average for the 70 heifers was a remarkable 264.8p.

107 OTM cattle and feeding cows took another hike in price with top figures 250p and £1912 and the average jumped to 178.4p.

Calf numbers steady at 39 with bulls to £335 and heifers £255.

Wet weather over the weekend had hardly been conducive to sheep sorting, but there were 1045 hoggs on offer with the best at 275p and £149.68 per head.

Trade generally hard work for the auctioneer with demand easier than last week and the SQQ average 231.5p.

Cull sheep out in force with 665 on offer.  Ewes sold to £220, but the entry included a good many plain sorts and the average emerged at £83.53.

BAKEWELL 4WD SALE BLASTS TO £40,100

The onsite Monday sale of land rovers and 4WD vehicles attracted a mixed entry with the land rover marque dominating the lots and bidding.

Top call £40,100 + vat for a Land Rover 90 Defender (County Pack) 2015 with 25,000 miles from a local small farm at Ashbourne, there were 4 active bidders and it eventually was clinched by a Northamptonshire farmer.

Another Land Rover 90 Defender 2014 showing 48,000 miles achieved £23,000 + vat.

Ford Ranger Wildcats sold well with a 2018 model at £22,000.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

A very useful entry of 314 head, but still not enough to satisfy the demand from a full line up of buyers, some of whom failed to get started.

The current trade for finished cattle is certainly giving confidence to buyers keen to keep their yards topped up.

The sale started with a few Dexter breeding cattle achieving the princely sum of £390 for a cow & calf.

These were followed by 23 Feeding Bulls

Which sold very well indeed and included:

£1000 Hfd 19-21 mnths D Beckett, Pilsley
£500 Hfd 6 mnths B Snow, Ipstones
£1130 Lim x 9 mnths E & C Matkin, Idridgehay
£715 Lim x 7-8 mnths GCG Robinson, Longnor
£810 Char x 9-11 mnths Miss C Dawson, Bawtry

137 Steers ave £1039

A wonderful trade with some classy cattle in the entry as can be seen from the average of £1,039.

Hereford and Angus cattle keenly sought and blacker and whites than we have seen for a while selling particularly well.
