Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 16-01-2023

MONDAY 16TH JANUARY

Despite a flooded drive 668 cattle and 1364 sheep managed to make their way to Bakewell.

The cattle trade was outstanding in all departments with a full line up of buyers operating and some remarkable prices and averages achieved.

In the sheep section it is pleasing to be able to report an improved demand after a rather bleak spell.

The store & breeding cattle section was well supported with 332 head on offer and clear evidence that the new level of prices experienced last week have been maintained.  Steers sold to £1,510 and heifers £1,860 with feeding bulls to £1,280.

In the breeding sections cows with young calves sold to £1,570 and stock bulls £3,550.

Rest assured that Bakewell buyers would like to bid for your store cattle.  Any questions speak to Alastair Sneddon on 07973 982441.

Another excellent turnout of 156 finished cattle which sold on a marvellous trade.

Top figures 313p/kg and £2,084 per head.

The average for the 79 heifers which included all comers was a healthy 257.7p.

In the OTM department numbers were up with 131 this week.  Top figures 249p/kg and £1,967 per head.  The average looked good at 172.8p.

49 calves forward with bulls £322 and heifers £285.

In the sheep section numbers were back somewhat following a recent lacklustre trade, but things have improved somewhat with hoggs to 299p and £144.60 and the SQQ average up a full 10p to 241.6p.

Another large entry of 528 cull sheep saw ewes to 218 and an improved average at £97.15.
