Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2023-02-06

A normal market with decent entries of 743 cattle and 1,477 sheep.

For the avoidance of doubt we have been informed that the BBC Countryfile episode that was filmed in the market last week will be shown on Sunday 19th February.

The cattle trade was several notches dearer in the finished and OTM sections with recent price levels maintained in the store & breeding department.

There were 494 store & breeding cattle with a tremendous line up of buyers and an outstanding trade from start to finish.  Steers reached £1,660, heifers £1,540 and feeding bulls £1,140.

In the breeding section cows with calves sold to £1,470 and in calf cows £1,520.

Fewer finished cattle this week and definitely not enough to satisfy demand.

Top figures 329p/kg and £2,366 per head.

The average for the 52 heifers was a record breaking 280.7p/kilo.

Shorter numbers of OTM cattle with only 102 this week and the trade even dearer.

Top figures 260p/kg and £2,459 per head.

The average was an astonishing 193.8p.

34 calves on offer with bulls to £385 and heifers £300.

In the sheep section there were 1,189 hoggs forward with trade solid, but not very exciting.

Top figures 290p/kg and £141.11 per head.

The SQQ average ended up at 220.5p.

A modest entry of 266 cull sheep with ewes to £170 to average £86.02 for a very mixed sample.

RIP UP THE RECORD BOOKS!

Up 7 pence on the week

The cows have been getting dearer and dearer but today we set our new personal best of 193.88p or £1303.50.

Every cow today was beyond all expectations but an impressive 49 cattle topped £2.  Harold & Brian Ponsonby won the top price cattle at 244p (£1790) for a 4-year-old Simmental cow that was closely followed by Charlie Taberner at 240p (£1776).  Two cows topped £2000 with the best being an impressive pedigree Simmental cow from David Donnelly, Hulland Ward at a record price of £2459.20 (212p) with a 10-year-old Lim x from John Gould at £2057 (213p). A wonderful day to be selling cows with the obvious question being how long can this last?  Unfortunately, my crystal ball stopped working a long time ago but we must make the most of it while it is here and sell your cows on their feet in Bakewell.

35 Steers ave 275.4p/kg

Well, up to now I thought I was having a good day in the prime ring, but all my Christmas’ and birthdays seemed to happen today for me with the clean cattle beyond all expectations.  Last week’s record values looked very outdated very quickly as we started the clean cattle.

The steers today averaged 277.44p – Another record, with the top 6 over £3 including 2 from a returning vendor Ian Mellor, Kniveton who had 2 Lims at 310 and 305p.  Keith Harrop had 303p, Charles Jeffery 301p with Messrs Charlesworth at 300p and Oliver Easom also at £3 for a dairy bred Blue.  The gross values look equally impressive with the Jeffrey Family selling Blonde to £2158 and £2004.  Herefords to 266p, Angus to 280p and a Norw Red steer at 251p (£1807).

A reduced entry with the majority of categories, still a strong trade but not electrifying.

Plain ewes were probably better to sell by just a whisker when compared to last week.

Better mules £78-£80 odd per head but no absolute massive sorts forward.
