Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 13-02-2023

A bumper crop of cattle with 812 forward together with 1529 sheep.

Just when you thought cattle could get no dearer, they have, with market records tumbling in all sections.

The store & breeding cattle section had gathered 503 head which in turn had attracted a very strong line up of bidders from far and wide.

Steers sold to £1,720, Heifers £1,730 and Feeding Bulls £1,070.

There were plenty of large consignments which allowed well matched bunches to be offered, speeding up the rate of the sale and undoubtably commanding a premium.

In the finished cattle department both numbers and prices were up.  A total of 143 cattle were sold with top figures 328p and £2,209 per head.

Our regular barometer of trade the average for the 83 heifers saw the mercury rise to 280.1p a figure only exceeded at a Christmas Primestock sale.

It was the same story in the OTM section with 138 head on offer and top figures 270p/kg and £2,148/head.

The average reached new heights at 189.2p.

Just 35 calves this week with bulls to £330 and heifers £270.

Over in the sheep shed the trade for the 985 finished hoggs was a shade better with top figures 294p/kg and £136.32 per head.

The SQQ average looked a bit perkier at 231.6p.

Cull sheep were out in force with ewes to £132 and the average £72.49.

Bakewell Market Report

138 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows overall average 189.3p /kg or (£1,247.41)

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

Just to prove last week was not a fluke, we have done it again this week with the overall average within a shade of last week’s record with an extra 36 cows.  Trade was like a ‘ball of fire’ all day with some finding too hot to handle.  54 cattle today topped £2/kg with a few OTM clean about today in the 238-243p bracket.  Best price however was a pure Limousin (1 calf) cow from the Wells Family at Monyash at a sparkling 270p (£1630).  A trio of big cows passed the £2000 barrier with a couple of big well made Limousin from Messrs Charlesworth, Bradbourne and also a Charolais from Arthur Prue.  I would love the opportunity to market and sell your cattle, please give me a call and I can give you a confidential, no obligation opinion of what we can do.
