Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 06-03-2023

Despite a wintry forecast the elements held off and did not disrupt a busy market day with 758 cattle and 1,346 sheep on offer.

Cattle prices remain stratospheric and it is pleasing to report that sheep prices have lifted nicely.

There was a good turnout of store and breeding cattle with a total of 453 on parade.  Numbers were bolstered by a special entry of 42 in calf beef cows from the Pattinson family at Weaver.

In the regular stores both steers and heifers hit a top figure of £1,710 with feeding bulls also selling well to £1,490.

Stock bulls were in demand with the best of three making £2,850.

Bakewell continues to attract a useful entry of finished cattle with 131 this week.

Trade remains outstanding with top figures 334p/kg and £2,181/head.

The average for the 70 heifers emerged at a solid 283.4p.

126 OTM and Feeding Cows forward with things just as dear.  Top figures 264p and £2,131 per head with the overall average 189.0p.

A few more calves about with 48 on offer, bulls to £262 and heifers £235.

In the sheep section 999 hoggs were better sold with the best to 316p and £149 per head.

The SQQ average was 251.7p.

342 cull sheep this week with a top figure of £184 and the ewe average a healthy £105.60.

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

Trade remains outstanding for the cow meat with the overall average within a few pence of the last couple of weeks and that was with 2 wholesale buyers away on lambing duties but have assured me that they will be back next week.

47 cows today topped £2/kilo with the top 10 all over 240p and a high of 264p for one of a run from John Key, Midhopestones with another run from Ian Woodward up to 262, 250 x2 and 249p or £2131.  57 vendors today at Bakewell and enjoyed the trade.  Why not come and experience it for yourself?  I would love the opportunity to market and sell your cows.  Please give me a call for a confidential, no obligation opinion of what we can do.
