Snow over the weekend followed by a deluge today meant many would be kept away from market. 610 cattle and 1,734 sheep did arrive with the cattle looking well sold today and the sheep selling on an improved trade.

 

The finished cattle had 110 head with trade out of this world again with the 60 heifers levelling at 286.4p, although there was a shortage of bulls on offer.

 

Only 63 Barrens today with a record average of 201.86p or £1332.

 

390 store & breeding cattle with 20 breeding cattle this week maintained the recent high prices with plenty of the biggest ‘short keep’ cattle over £1500.

 

The 1090 hoggs averaged an improved 256.6p with a top price of 324p as well as several others over 300p.

Finally, a bumper crop of 644 ewes and rams topped £216 for a ewe with the overall average at £96.

Just when I believed that they may have levelled off trade has taken another leap forward to average over £2 for the first time ever in Bakewell.  The overall average is up 12 pence on the week and unbelievably 40p ahead of last year.  Whilst these levels exist and the buyers want to fight over your cattle, the only way to sell them Is on their legs in Bakewell Livestock Market.  14 best cows today topped 230p with a high of 276p (£2158) for a superb Lim x cow from Jack Blackshaw, Pilsley and another run from Ian Woodward up to 270p and £1990.

Another superb run of heifers averaged a remarkable 286.4p/kg with all breeds, sizes and weights accounted for.  24 heifers topped £3/kilo and a high of 328 for a Michael Wynne special that sold to Wayne on behalf of Messrs Meakin Bros, Quality Butchers in Leek, Staffordshire.  6 Angus sold to 300p.

A great show of 410 store & breeding cattle and something for everyone.

The breeders dominated by the stock bulls which saw spirited bidding for all categories.

Top bull exhibited by The Mellor Family at Kniveton – just 4yrs old and full pedigree, this Limousin achieved £3220.  Second in line a pedigree Beef Shorthorn from the Moseley’s at Back Lane, Elton, 22 mnths and at £2,200.

Charolais stock bulls, 29 ½ mnths to £2120.

Feeding cows to £1040 for a Sim, 53 mnths with others at £960.

A very good entry of 1734 sheep included 1090 lambs.  Bakewell once again setting the trade for the week with the best lambs selling to a top of 324p/kg and 6 pens over the 300p/kg barrier.  The top gross price was £151.51/head and overall average 256.54p/kg.  Keep the quality coming as Bakewell is the market week on week.

In the cull ewes and rams numbers back up along with the trade.  Best texel ewes to £216 and £212.  Heavy Charollais ewes sold in the £145 – £150 bracket, Suffolks in the £130 – £145 bracket, heavy Mules in the £90-£120 range and horned ewes in the £40 – £60 bracket.
