Bakewell Market Report 2023-04-03

MONDAY 3rd APRIL

 

A very busy day at Bakewell for the last Monday market before the Easter break with 845 cattle and 1,678 sheep on offer.

The sale included the Easter lambs of which the details are to be found later in this report.

 

There was a very large entry of store & breeding cattle with trade even hotter than we have seen it before.  Steers reached £1,975 and heifers £1,840 with feeding bulls to £1,195.

In the breeding section cows and calves reached £2,350 and stock bulls £2,550.

 

136 finished cattle with top figures 320p and £2,212.  The average for the 69 heifers was 269.9p.

 

In the OTM section there was another decent entry of 134 with top figures 266p and £2,431.

The average this week looked very good at 193.9 with the per head average at a remarkable £1,309.

 

A few more calves about with 39 on offer.  Bulls sold to £440 and heifers £320.

 

Turning to the sheep there were 108 Spring lambs on offer.  Show lambs reached 550p/kg and £269.50 per head, with the SQQ average at 376.2p.

 

In the hogg section there was a good turnout of 1,363 with top figures 330p and £160.43.

The SQQ for hoggs (OSL) was 278.7p.

 

Just 195 cull ewes forward with ewes to £199 to average £127.58.

Big numbers and high prices

Another very big show of cows and some remarkable prices throughout to average an amazing 193.5p or over £1300 per head.  A full line up of buyers led to strong bidding from the start.  49 cattle today sold over £2/kg with a high of 266p or a superb £2431 for a Lim x well fed cow from Harold & Brian Ponsonby, Tideswell Moor.  All the better cattle 240p plus with plenty of bigger cattle over £1800.

A good show again with 44 vendors sending cattle this week and selling to a good line up of butchers and wholesalers.

 

20 Young Bulls ave 268.9p/kg

Very dear this week with the top trio over 300p and 4 over £2000, Steven Jones led the way at 311p (£2033) and 307p with Blue x Limmys.  John Ottewell had a well fed Blue x at 310p (£2374) with a quality pure Limmy from Malcolm Bennett making £2585 (287p).  6 Friesian Bulls today averaged 244p and topped at 251p for Steve Potter, Bonsall with Dairy Shorthorns from James Hole up to 229p.

All sorts today with 22 continental, 15 native and 9 B/W bullocks on offer with all quality well bid for.  Suckler bred sorts as always command a premium and topped at 308p for a Lim from Keith Harrop, Alport with 2 more at 330p and 2 more at 290p.  Sue Jeffery had 307p for a posh Blonde with PJB at 303p.  Angus to 280p with Dairy Steers to £245 for a Norwegian.

A good cusp of heifers today with power, weight and finish the order of the day.  Peter Gaunt had a good run of 7 today that topped at 320p twice (both over £2000) with plenty today over £3/kg and the top 8 over £2000.

A total entry of 1678 sheep included 1471 lambs.  An excellent show of 108 Spring lambs forward for the Easter show and sale with judging kindly undertaken by Robert Bowring of Warsop.  He chose his champion a 49kg Texel shown by J & N Easom & Family which went on to sell for 550p/kg grossing £270 and was purchased by the judge.

In the old season lambs 1363 on offer selling on a flying trade for all types.  Best butcher lambs sold to 330p/kg with light weight butchers lambs to 318p/kg, heavy butchers lambs to 310p/kg and overweight to 296p/kg.  Best heavy lambs sold to a top gross of £160/head.  The overall average 278.75p/kg.

Cull Sheep

Just 195 cull ewes and rams saw trade very brisk with excellent ewes forward.  Best Texel ewes sold to £199 for 3 different vendors and the top 10 pens averaging £189.30.  Heavy Char ewes sold in the £160-£170 bracket, Suffolks £130-£140 and Mules £90-£110.
