MONDAY 17TH APRIL

 

A bumper entry of stock in all departments with a total of 2,622 sheep and 929 cattle on offer with every pen in the market filled.

 

Finished cattle as dear as aver with heifers to 342p/kg and steers to 338p/kg.

 

OTM’s following a similar theme with the best to 300p/kg and a more than respectable average of 196p/kg.

 

The sheep shed was busier than has been seen for a number of years in advance of the festival with a total of 2622 comprising 1780 hoggs, 139 Spring lambs and 703 cull sheep with trade strong in all departments.  We thank all vendors for their patience when unloading

 

It is worth pointing out that for the first two Bank Holidays in May we will be operating MONDAY Markets.

Peak Farmers Group

 

The next Peak Farmers Group event is Farm Health and Safety and will take place on Tuesday 9th May at Lower Plumpton Farm, Barmoor Clough, Dove Holes. We will be joined by Amy Gyte & Richard Archer. Amy will be discussing slurry gases and machinery health and safety and will be giving us advice on the topic. Richard will be talking to us about safe cattle handling and demonstrating cattle handling systems. The talk will start at 11am and close at 1pm when lunch will be served. The trade gets better and better with 56 vendors today enjoying the trade given by 17 different buyers at ringside including a returning wholesale buyer.  Just about the dearest ever I would expect today with the price simply out of this world.  OTM clean heifers (34 mnths) peaked at £3/kilo from Charlie Boden, Mellor to gross £2064 with his 5 ½ year old Char cow also grossing over 2k at £2083.

52 OTM’s today sold over £2/kg with 23 over 220p.

Clearly the dearest I have seen them with a fighting spirit amongst the buyers at ringside.  11 better sorts topped £3/kg with the top 4 over 330p and a high of 338p for one of the first draw from James and George Blackshaw, Bakewell who had others at 334, 327 & 326 etc.  Don Lownds topped at 336p (£2190) with another at 320p (£2355).  5 Angus to 281, 3 Hfd to 280p, 3 Lincoln to 260p and 4 B/W also in the entry today.

This level of trade continues to stagger me with prices beyond everybody’s wildest dreams.  Two Blue heifers shared the spoils at the top of the pile at 342p for shapey sorts from Steven, Steff & Owen Wells, Monyash with the same price for Roger Tomkinson to gross £2010.  15 heifers today cleared £3 with the 8 biggest over £2000.

An exceptional entry with trade good for all sections and thanks to one and all for their very hard work.

Stars of the show included a pedigree Limousin cow with bull calf at foot from Ray Bird.  Best steers to £1880 and heifers to £1910.

 

18 Breeding Cattle

The star was undoubtably Ray Bird with his pedigree Limousin Cathray dispersal.  His second calved pedigree cow, 47 mnths with 32-day old shapely bull calf romped away to £3750 with his older cow 105 mnths with young heifer calf at £2950.

Garner Holdings received spirited bidding for young Angus outfits to a top of £1840 and others at £1660.

Feeding Hereford cows to £1010 for Mary Cawser.

Top call £1500 for a pure Limousin from Robert Hardy at Cauldon Low.

A total entry of 2622 head of sheep on offer included 1919 lambs.  Numbers well up on the week with 139 new season lambs on offer.  Best Texels peaked at 420p/kg and overall average 361.39p/kg.

In the old season lambs a total of 1919 with all grades on offer.  Meated sorts all selling at over 300p/kg with the smaller end (under 45kg) realising 320p/kg.  The best quality butchers’ lambs peaked at 336p/kg and top gross of over £181/head.  The overall average 299.53p/kg which included a large proportion of Mule, horned and plain sorts.

Cull Sheep

To finish the sheep section off a total of 703 on offer saw a top of £260 for a pen of 8 from Lancashire with 2 other pens from the same farm both at £249.  A pen of local Texels to £248 and Texels out of Cheshire to £240. A total of 14 pens over £215/head.  Heavy Mule ewes sold in the £120-£140 bracket with best Wiltshire horn ewes selling over £100/head.
