Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2023-05-01

Decent entries for the first of the Bank Holiday Monday markets, which was well supported by both sellers and buyers with 665 cattle and 864 sheep on offer.  Don’t forget that next week is also a Bank Holiday Monday market.

Prices were well up to snuff with new market records in both store and finished cattle sections.

There were 437 store and breeding cattle, a very good show for a May Day market.  Trade was outstanding as was the quality of cattle on offer.  The combination of the two factors produced record prices with a 24 mnth old Blonde x steer from Eric Slaney, Stowe by Chartley making £2,100, he also had store heifers to £1,830 and another vendor had heifers to £1,880.

Feeding bulls sold to £1,430 and in the breeding section a Lim Stock Bull made £2,850.

The finished cattle section also had a bonanza with steers to 338p and £2,403 per head and heifers to 332p and £2,177 per head.

The average for the 48 heifers was a healthy 279.0p.

Business was brisk in the OTM department with 90 head on offer.  Top figures of 273 pence and £2,161 per head.  The average settle at 201p, possibly the highest it has ever been.

Calves seem to be a little more numerous with 51 on offer this week.  Bulls sold to £270 and heifers £225.

Over in the sheep section Spring lamb numbers are on the rise with 98 on parade.

Trade was exceptional with the best on offer to 426p/kg and £170.83 per head.

The SQQ average was 380.6 pence.  Hogg numbers starting to fall with just 611 forward, but selling well.

Top figures 348p and £198.03 per head with the SQQ looking good at 307.5p.

Relatively few cull sheep with only 155 on offer.  Trade remarkable with ewes to £200 to average £119.29

90 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows overall average 201.1p/kg or £1345

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

They get dearer and dearer with the average today over £2/kg for only the second time, but cattle today are simply off the clock.  Although it is a Bank Holiday, all buyers were in attendance and needing cattle to fill orders.

53 today topped £2/kg including a big number of B/W’s.  Best suckler bred cows rose to 273p/kg for a Blue x feeder from C Whittaker with the better done cows generally 230p plus.  Trade is here and now and if you have them to sell you should act now and sell them in Bakewell Livestock Market next week, business as usual with cows starting at 9.45.  God Save The King!
