Bakewell Market Report 08-05-2023

Despite it being the Kings Coronation Bank Holiday weekend numbers were strong in all departments with a total of 708 cattle and 1,504 sheep on offer and an excellent trade reported in all sections.

 

A total of 105 finished cattle and young bulls continued to sell extremely well with top prices of 351p/kg and a top gross of just over £2500.

 

A similar story for the cull cows and OTM’s with 104 on offer to 270p/kg and £2059 in the lump.

 

Store cattle continue to keep coming with a similar entry to last week with a total of 441 with trade just as dear.  Within the breeding section a Limousin Stock Bull topped £4,700 and within the stores Steers to £2,120 and heifers to £1,800.

 

Spring Lamb numbers steadily increasing with 170 forward and trade holding up well to average 380p/kg and top price in the lump of £186.

Hogg trade on fire to average 315.53p/kg, but that said an excellent show of quality on offer to a top of 355p/kg and £181 in the lump with an overall average of £138 per head.

Cull ewes just as dear as last week for the 333 forward to average £126 per head to a top of £210.

 

57 calves forward with a competitive trade for all with a top of £420 for a Limousin bull.

104 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows overall average 194.3p/kg or £1235

Over 100 cows for the Kings Bank Holiday sale and some lovely cows on offer, although not quite the price of last week’s record trade.  Prices peaked at 270p for a 1 calf under age Limmy with 47 of the better cattle over £2/kilo and 16 up and over 220p. Big cows sold to £2059 for a tremendous black Lim from Frank Lomas with plenty of big cows over £1600.

A solid trade throughout for the offering.  Lim steers sold to 209p for a posh handy weight sort from Phil & Emma Watson, Ashover, with heavy sorts at 305p for Clive Bacon and 304p for Keith Harrop.  Bigger cattle sold over £2000 with Andrew Edge at the top of the tree at £2291.  Angus to 288p and Herefords to 272p.

A superb average, a top price of 351p for a Michael Wynne special that sold to Joe Kemp, Quality Butchers at Hayfield, High Peak.  Joe Brennand and the Wells family both had 338p with all the better sorts easily over 300p.

Big numbers for the Bank Holiday sale with buyers in a keen mood after recent good finished cattle sales.

Cull Sheep

A better show of 324 cull sheep saw trade even dearer than recent high levels with a pen of 12 big Texel ewes topping the market at £210/head and 5 pens over £195/head.  Big Suffolk ewes sold to £198/head with heavy Mules over £130/head.  Strong horned ewes to £100.
