Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Despite it being the Kings Coronation Bank Holiday weekend numbers were strong in all departments with a total of 708 cattle and 1,504 sheep on offer and an excellent trade reported in all sections.

A total of 105 finished cattle and young bulls continued to sell extremely well with top prices of 351p/kg and a top gross of just over £2500.

A similar story for the cull cows and OTM’s with 104 on offer to 270p/kg and £2059 in the lump.

Store cattle continue to keep coming with a similar entry to last week with a total of 441 with trade just as dear.  Within the breeding section a Limousin Stock Bull topped £4,700 and within the stores Steers to £2,120 and heifers to £1,800.

Spring Lamb numbers steadily increasing with 170 forward and trade holding up well to average 380p/kg and top price in the lump of £186.

Hogg trade on fire to average 315.53p/kg, but that said an excellent show of quality on offer to a top of 355p/kg and £181 in the lump with an overall average of £138 per head.

Cull ewes just as dear as last week for the 333 forward to average £126 per head to a top of £210.

57 calves forward with a competitive trade for all with a top of £420 for a Limousin bull.

Over 100 cows for the Kings Bank Holiday sale and some lovely cows on offer, although not quite the price of last week’s record trade.  Prices peaked at 270p for a 1 calf under age Limmy with 47 of the better cattle over £2/kilo and 16 up and over 220p. Big cows sold to £2059 for a tremendous black Lim from Frank Lomas with plenty of big cows over £1600.

Just a few more than last week with averages way up on the week as a result of a better show of quality fed cattle.

21 Young Bulls ave 273.2p/kg (up 7p on the week)

A small show of bulls again as expected with most abattoirs shut for the Bank Holiday.  Normal service next week.  A superb Limmy topped at 344p or £2373 for Dukes Drive, Buxton with big boys up to £2500 for Richard Harris, Alkmonton.

A solid trade throughout for the offering.  Lim steers sold to 209p for a posh handy weight sort from Phil & Emma Watson, Ashover, with heavy sorts at 305p for Clive Bacon and 304p for Keith Harrop.  Bigger cattle sold over £2000 with Andrew Edge at the top of the tree at £2291.  Angus to 288p and Herefords to 272p.

A superb average, a top price of 351p for a Michael Wynne special that sold to Joe Kemp, Quality Butchers at Hayfield, High Peak.  Joe Brennand and the Wells family both had 338p with all the better sorts easily over 300p.

8 natives to 275p for a Hereford.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Mark Elliott)

Big numbers for the Bank Holiday sale with buyers in a keen mood after recent good finished cattle sales.

The sale started with 27 Breeding Stock which included:

A pedigree Limousin stock bull was the undoubted star of the breeding section with a lot of pre-sale interest in the 9-year-old bull which sold for £4,700 for Dukes Drive Farm Shop at Buxton.

Good numbers and buyers out in force with the highlights coming late in the sale.  For the second week in succession at the record price at Bakewell was broken with his three Blonde Steers (2yrs) selling at £2120 and £2050 and £2000.  Plenty of other highlights throughout the sale as detailed below.

A similar entry of calves with something for everyone within the entry for a mixed range of quality.

All types keenly bid for to a large contingent of purchasers with Limousin bulls to £420, B Blue to £285 and heifers seeing Limousin to £340 and B Blue to £305.

Black & White calves light on numbers but those forward were rewarded with a competitive trade throughout.

A very good Bank Holiday entry of 1495 sheep included 170 new season lambs.  The best butchers lambs selling to a top of 428p/kg with 10 pens over 405p and top gross of £186.75.  Overall average 380p/kg.

In the old season lambs 1001 on offer with meated sorts, regardless of weight well bid for.  Best shaped butchers lambs sold to 355p/kg with heavy weights to 349p/kg and overweights to 328p/kg.  The top gross price of £181.22 per head.  The overall market average 316.01p/kg.

A better show of 324 cull sheep saw trade even dearer than recent high levels with a pen of 12 big Texel ewes topping the market at £210/head and 5 pens over £195/head.  Big Suffolk ewes sold to £198/head with heavy Mules over £130/head.  Strong horned ewes to £100.
