Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 05-06-2023

A full house after the Bank Holiday week with 833 cattle and 1,547 sheep on offer.

The need for a drop of rain is the subject of many conversations with nothing on the forecast, but there is no evidence of a drop in trade as a consequence.

Store and breeding cattle continue to arrive in large numbers with 510 on offer.  Trade very much as we have seen it in recent weeks with steers to £1,780, heifers to £1,480 and feeding bulls to £1,400.

In the breeding section cows and calves reached £1,860 with Angus stock bulls to £1,400.

A very large entry of 182 finished cattle produced excellent results with top figures 356p/kg and £2,368 per head.

The average for the 85 heifers was 276.8p with the gross average £1,577 per head.

The steers looked good too with averages at 274.0 pence and a tremendous £1,803 per head.

Good numbers of OTM cattle on offer with 116 forward.  Top figures 271 pence and £2,125 per head.  The average a solid 189.2 pence.

Just 25 calves this week with bulls to £340 and heifers £380.

Over in the sheep shed Spring lambs are coming in even greater numbers with 575 on offer.

Top figures 422p and £179.35.  The SQQ average 351.3p.

The 441 hoggs were a mixed lot as one might expect at this time of year.  The best on offer to 326p and £188.15 per head.  The SQQ average was 288.6p.

A decent show of 429 cull sheep with ewes to £196 to average £118.84.

116 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows overall average 189.2p/kg or £1257

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

A good turnout of cows again this week and trade very much up to the mark of the previous weeks.  Unquestionably the only way to make the most of your barren cows is to market them in the live arena and preferably in Bakewell.  Best cows today comfortably over 220p with a lovely pure Limousin heifer topping at 271p (£1929) from Steven, Steff & Owen Wells, Monyash.  Two other over age clean made 254 and 250p/kg with best cow at 226p for David Batterbee.  Plenty of interest in the leaner cows too with a number of feeding buyers around the ring looking for cows to improve.
