Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 12-06-2023

An excellent entry given the warm harvesting conditions with a total of 832 cattle and 1,291 sheep on offer and trade brisk in all departments.

The store cattle section was once again very busy with upwards of 500 in total with an excellent show of 72 breeding cattle creating significant interest to a top of £2070.  A similar story for the steers and heifers to a top of £1660.

Finished cattle numbers again strong with a total of 147 and trade possibly even dearer that the previous week with heifers to 327p/kg and steers to 328p/kg.

137 OTM cattle also in strong demand with a top gross of £2547.

Sheep trade a little easier on the week in line with the national trend, but still a respectable SQQ average of 322.52p/kg.  Whilst old season lambs start to dry up and ewes possibly an easier trade.

A few more calves about with plenty of interest and top call of £430 for a B Blue bull.

137 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows overall average 186.6p/kg or £1274

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

More cows than last week and nearly double than the same week last year.  Also, some very good cows on offer this week with a handful of continental pedigree cows that certainly added up.  The average on the week was 3 pence less and that is possibly a fair reflection on trade.  44 cattle still topped £2/kilo including the top price of 266p for a 1 calf 34 mnth old Lim x from Eric Allen, Windley.  Cows remain good to sell with the best way of achieving the maximum value is to sell them on their feet in Bakewell Livestock Market.  If you would like any on farm confidential advice about selling barren cows give me a call on 07801 530899.
