Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2023-06-19

A busy market day after some very welcome rain with 777 cattle and 1,745 sheep on offer.

Numbers boosted by a particularly large entry of 167 OTM cattle.

The store & breeding section has kept its numbers up with 418 head in total.

A strong line up of buyers operating with trade much as we have come to expect.

Steers to £1,880, heifers to £1,600 and bulls to £1,200.

In the breeding section cows and calves sold to £1,750 and stock bulls to £2,550.

A decent turnout of 147 finished cattle sold on a slightly easier trade as anticipated with the best on offer to 338p/kg and £2,184 per head.

The average for the 68 heifers was 272.5p which gives an indication of the level of trade.

As already mentioned, the OTM section was very busy with 167 animals forward.

Trade not surprisingly a shade less with top figures 250p and £1,990 the average still looking good at 177.7 pence.

45 calves this week with bulls to £425 and heifers £385.

Over in the sheep department there were larger entries than anticipated and many more than the same week 12 months ago.

The SQQ average settled at 290.1 pence.

Still 285 hoggs to sell with top figures 286p and £161.25 with the SQQ 241.5p.

167 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows overall average 177.7p/kg or £1151

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

A massive entry of 167 cows from 75 vendors at Bakewell this week with all shapes, sizes, breeds and ages represented.  The entry is more than double the equivalent entry of this week last year as more and more cattle find their way to Bakewell.  Trade was certainly easier today with the average about 10 pence less on the week but for a more varied show of cows.  Best cows still good to sell with a top of 250p for a good Limousin cow that sold for feeding from Jonathon Hall, Youlgreave.  Better sorts still 220p plus with plenty more over £2.  17 Herefords to 199p, 15 Angus to 201p, 2 Longhorn to 184p with Red Poll, White Park, Dexter and Lincoln all represented.
