Bakewell Market Report 26-06-2023
MONDAY 26TH JUNE
Reduced numbers with only 569 cattle and 1,292 sheep as might be expected at this time of year. Trade very strong in all sections and plenty of highlights to report.
A total of 309 store and breeding cattle with trade very brisk and plenty of demand as can be noted from these figures, steers to £1,880, heifers to £1,840 and feeding bulls £960.
In the breeding section cows and calves sold to £1,740 and stock bulls £3,080.
Fewer finished cattle on offer, but quality particularly good. Top figures 322p/kg and £2,165.
The average for the 54 heifers was a healthy 279p and the per head average a substantial £1,667.
A good turnout of 131 OTM and feeding cows with top figures 245p and £2,023. The average was up a shade on last week at 182.3p.
31 calves this week with bulls to £452 and heifers £266.
Over in the sheep department there was a decent sample of 772 lambs with the best on offer to 370p/kg and £165.50.
The SQQ looked good at 308.8p/kg.
Still a few hoggs about with top prices of 279p and £132.
The SQQ for a very mixed sample 251.5p.
Finally, there were 350 cull sheep on offer, ewes sold to £168 to average £91.19

131 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows overall average 182.4p/kg or £1204.85

Good numbers once again with 57 farms sending cows to Bakewell and receiving a fair market price for their cows. Trade remains very good not the highs of April and May but still more than can be achieved elsewhere. 27 cows today topped £2/kg with a high of 245p for a Sim (1 calf) heifer (34 mnths) for Messrs Willison, Warsop with older cows to 244p or £1893 for a tremendous Limmy from John Grummett, Smisby.
Herefords to 216p, Angus to 203p, Shorthorn to 196p, Stabilizer to 183p and Longhorns to 188p.

Less cattle about than last week and that has been good for the trade with the old laws of supply and demand at the fore with all buyers keen for cattle and generally a sharper trade.
15 Young Bulls ave 267.6p/kg
Only a few, but look at the average with a good sample of bulls present. The Wells family won the race and topped the day 295p/kg (£1852) closely followed at 294p for a Blonde from Catherine Potter who was matched by her 10-year-old son Daniel with his Limousin also at 294p. Big boys from Neil Massey sold to £2360 and £2268.

Less on offer but a sharper trade with appetite from the buyers for meat. Sue & Charles Jeffery had a cracking Limousin (called James) at the top of the pile at 313p to gross £2165 with a couple from Hazledine farms at 306p. 4 bigger sorts over £2000, Angus to 262p, Herefords to 233p, Stabilizers to 262p and 4 Shorthorns to 280p and even a Highland in the entry at 178p.

Trade felt good, better than the average with the top 15 over 300p/kg, but a number of dairy bred sorts and 14 natives today, although looking well sold just held the average back. Keith Harrop had a good run today with his best to 322, 318 and 305p/kg. Peter Gaunt had 321,314 & 310p/kg etc and Clive Bacon at 310 and 306p/kg. 11 Herefords to 276p/kg and Angus to 282p/kg.

A mixed entry with very good results and buyers for everything from the best continentals through to the small native heifers and Friesian bulls.
The stars were undoubtably the British Blues from Mr Brian Hudson at Ipstones with Mr Fotherby’s Friesian bull also needing a mention.
Top call £452 for a 23-day old Blue from Mr Hudson who also had Blue heifers (14 days) to £266.
In the continental heifer’s best blues to £266 for Mr Hudson with others at £256 from the same farm.
Native bulls very good to sell to a top of £288 for a Hereford from the Fotherby family with Montbeliarde bulls to £232 for the Waltons at Rising Sun.
Hereford heifers to £106 and Shorthorn heifers to £90.

350 Cull Sheep
A good show of 350 cull ewes and rams saw demand good right from the start with the first pen sold topping the day with 7 Texel ewes from Peter Furness selling at £168 with Char x to £154. Meated Mule ewes sold in the £110-£120 bracket.
