Store cattle numbers starting to dry up but Olivers section continuing to come up with the goods with a total of 241 on offer.

 

A total of 130 finished cattle and bulls continued to sell at recent rates with top price 314p/kg for steers and 313p/kg for heifers with barren cows still holding firm to a top of 280p/kg.

 

The reduced entry of store cattle did not deter purchasers from attending with an excellent trade with heifers to a top of £1,860 and steers to £1,845.

 

Sheep trade up a bit on the end of last week following the Muslim festival with lambs averaging 286p/kg to a top of 320p/kg with well finished sorts looking particularly well sold.

Cull ewes light on numbers but again trade a bit sharper to a top of £182.

 

A few more calves about with a total of 37 and a flying trade to a top of £470.

 

Todays market also had a visit from ‘The tractor relay’ on its journey from Lands End to John O Groats which is planning to visit as many livestock markets and rural sectors on its journey to raise money for the ‘Farming Community Network’ this was well supported and we wish them well with their journey! A total of £234.88 was raised here at Bakewell Market and Bagshaws have kindly matched this donation to make a grand total of £469.76.

Just a few less about again and a returning buyer at ringside led to a solid trade once again with the average within a penny of the average last week.  In reality some Farm Assured cows actually dearer against a falling deadweight price.  26 cows today cleared the £2/kg mark with a smart 29-month-old, 1 calf Limmy at the top of the heap at 280p. from Caz Sharpley with the same having an older cow at 232p.  Hereford to 225p, Angus to 203p, Stabilizer to 206p with speckled Park at 192p.

Bigger numbers on offer today and a very good price for all, although a number of second quality goods about today.

 

29 Young Bulls ave 256p/kg

I would say that the bulls were dearer on the week with very fierce demand from the buyers at ringside.  16 continental bulls sold to 294p (twice) for heavyweights from David Goddard (one at £2152) with 6 of the biggest bulls over £2000.  3 Angus to 265p and 10 dairy bulls saw Friesians to 256p and Shorthorns to 236p/kg.

Better numbers again and some very smart sorts on offer sold on a very firm trade.  Second quality sorts perhaps a little easier.  Paul & Michael Hazledine topped the day and sold to 314p/kg and 300p/kg with their only 2 bullocks.  Keith Harrop had 2 Lims at 304 and 303p/kg with 3 others at £3/kg.  10 Natives saw Angus to 283p, Beef Shorthorn to 279p and 2 Red Poll at 232p with a B/W also in the average at 226p/kg.
