Bakewell Market Report 2023-07-10
Another excellent entry of stock in all departments for mid-July with a total of 1,281 sheep and 511 cattle on offer.
A strong entry of 47 breeding cattle continued to sell at respectable levels to a top of £1,670 and the store cattle a similar picture with steers to £1,720 and heifers to £1,420.
Olivers department continued its usual run of good form with a total of 241 gathered comprising 121 finished cattle and 120 OTM’s. Trade brisk again for all types with a top of 322p/kg for clean cattle and a top gross of £2,127. OTM’s to 247p/kg and top gross just a shade under £2,000.
Lamb numbers continue to increase but trade a little easier in line with the national trend to average 284p/kg to a top of 330p, whilst a reduced entry of cull sheep sold at recent strong prices to a top of £167.
Calf trade ‘off the clock’ with B Blue bulls to a top of £460.

Extra cattle about again with a full line up of buyers and a solid trade once again. Yes, they are less money than they were in May, but there have been no massive drops in the live ring, just a small price correction. There is still demand for your cows so why not try a few in Bakewell where the buyers bid openly and fairly for the cows. 24 cows today topped £2/kg with a Blonde x heifer at the top for SG Potter, Bonsall at 247p, Herefords to 205p/kg, Sth Devons to 208p, Shorthorns to 212p and Angus to 229p.

A grand show of cattle again with 21 bulls and exactly 100 clean cattle on offer with all buyers around the ring, trade was brisk from start to finish.
21 Young Bulls ave 247.2p/kg
Suckler bred and posh bulls from David Goddard topped the day at 292p (£2073) with the better end over 260p. Friesians sold to 237p for P Furness.

Good cattle a good price and I wouldn’t say that they were any less money. 6 better things sold over £3/kg with 9 bigger and better fed continentals over £2000. Keith Harrop wont the race at the top of the list at 309p (twice) for super well fed and shapey sorts (both over £2000) Stuart Wainwright had a couple of specials at 308 and 302p with Rob Merryman and Phil Watson both at £3 level. 13 Natives today saw Angus to 279p and Herefords to 255p with 3 B/W’s to 239p.

A total entry of 1281 sheep included a very good show of 1046 new season lambs. The heavier weight, well finished lambs were in demand with the best end showing a top gross of £168/head.
