Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2023-07-24

A seasonal entry of 462 cattle and 1,664 sheep, despite the fact that the weather has not been very seasonal.  In fact, given the wet weekend it is surprising how many sheep had been sorted for sale.

The store & breeding cattle section assembled 274 head and enjoyed a tremendous trade with no sign of any reduction in confidence as a consequence of lower deadweight cattle prices.  Steers to £1,670, heifers £1,600 and feeding bulls £1,500.

The few breeding cattle were well sold with cow & calf outfits to £1,530 and £1,560.

There are new TB rules for cattle coming in to force in 1st August details of which will accompany this report.

If you have any questions about your own situation, give Alastair Sneddon a call on 07973 982441.

There were 95 finished cattle on offer with top figures 325p and £2,078 per head.

The average for the 46 heifers was 262.5 pence.

OTM numbers were well down with only 57 on offer.  Top figures 251 pence and £1,802 the average emerged at 169.38p.

Plenty of interest in the 36 calves on offer with bulls to £358 and heifers £204.

In the sheep department vendors had done very well to draw and sort 1,138 lambs over a very wet weekend.  Top prices 309p/kg and £150.12.

The SQQ looked good at 262.4 pence, down on last Monday, but better than many outlets at the end of last week.

313 cull sheep with a strong trade throughout, ewes to £188 to average £112.61
