Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2021-02-01

Better weekend weather and much improved travelling conditions ensured that entries were back to normal this week, with 614 cattle and 1,592 sheep on offer.

No question marks over trade either with tremendous prices achieved and plenty of competition in all sections.

The market is still operating under strict ‘Drop & Go’ rules, but with trade at its current level vendors need have no concerns about prices.

Bakewell buyers want the opportunity to bid for your cattle so if you have stores in test and are minded to sell do not hesitate to speak to Alastair Sneddon on 07973 982441.

A good show of 344 Store & Breeding Cattle sold exceptionally well with results greatly in advance of expectations.  Steers sold to £1,290, Heifers £1,270 and Feeding Bulls £1,120.

Finished cattle remain in great demand and the increased entry of 122 saw top figures of 259p and £1,670 per head.

Our regular barometer of prices the average for 50 heifers at 202p was testament to a solid trade.

OTM & Feeding Cows were more numerous at 115 with top figures 182p and £1,630 per head.  The average almost matched last week at 133.0p.

Just 33 Calves on parade this week, with bulls to £390 and heifers £280.

Better entries of sheep with 1,133 old season lambs forward.  An outstanding trade from start to finish with top figures 302p and £139.65 per head.  The SQQ average looked good at 260.1p

A decent turnout of 457 Cull Sheep saw the best ewes to £160 and the average a creditable £86.57

It is with great sadness that we inform you that Ian Hill, Farmer & Haulier from Totley, Sheffield has passed away.

A minute’s silence was held in his memory in both cattle rings prior to Monday’s sale.

MARKET NEWS

Doug Parker who has worked with Bagshaws for 50 years has decided to retire.

Doug has been a familiar face at Bakewell and other markets looking after the finished cattle and OTM’s with the fat bulls being his specialist subject in recent years.

The partners of Bagshaws would like to express their thanks to Doug for all his efforts over the years and to wish him well in his retirement.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

A decent entry of 344 included some which had failed to appear last week as a result of snow in certain areas.

There was plenty of buying power present or represented and an outstanding trade right through.

We Need Your Help

Please try to have your cattle delivered to Bakewell in good time, so that they can be sorted and numbered well before the sale starts.

There is a very good reason for doing this.

Buyers want a chance to view them before the sale starts, but because of the COVID-19 rule they also want to secure their places around the ring well before the sale commences.

It would assist our numbering team greatly and ensure the buyers can view your stock if the cattle could arrive in good time.

The sale commenced with a few Breeding Stock

£1000 B Blue x Cow, 99 mnths WT & K Greatholder, Turnditch
