Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 04-09-2023

664 cattle and 2,146 sheep on offer for the ‘catch up’ market following the Bank Holiday week with numbers tempered slightly with some vendors grounded after buying breeding sheep last Friday.

Attempts by the major processors to reduce deadweight prices seem to have come to nought with finished cattle on the rise and this has fuelled confidence in the store ring.

A decent entry of 337 store and breeding cattle failed to satisfy demand and prices were extremely strong.

Steers sold to £1,680, heifers £1,560 and feeding bulls £1,260.

The breeding cattle also looked dear with cows and calves to £2,080 and mature bulls £2,000.

There was an excellent entry of 168 finished cattle with top figures 332p and £2,213.

The average for the 71 heifers was 265.5 pence which shows the strength of demand.

Prices were up in the OTM section with 94 head on offer.  Top figures 250p and £2,133.

The average was considerably up on recent weeks at 175.1 pence and the per head average a healthy £1,153 to include all comers.

Another larger entry of calves for Bakewell with 65 examples on sale with bulls to £470 and heifers £302.

In the sheep department lamb numbers were good with 1,753 forward.  Top figures 300p/kg and £154.56 per head.

The SQQ average looked good at 254.7 pence.

In the cull sheep section 362 animals saw ewes to £170 to average £101.78.

New TB Rules starting 1st August

Please do not worry yourselves about the changes.  Most people will not have to do anything different except to supply us with a little extra information.

The new rules will be in place next Monday and we need everyone selling cattle & calves to tell us their Parish TB Testing Interval by ticking the box on the entry form. Just to confuse things, this might be different from the actual TB testing interval on your particular holding.

It is easy to check this on-line using the TB Hub – Parish testing interval checker.

In simpler terms:

All Staffordshire is 6 months

All Cheshire is 6 months

All Nottinghamshire is 12 months

All Leicestershire is 12 months

Where there is most confusion is in Derbyshire which is split between 6 months and 12 months.

The Ministry have not been able to provide us with a map showing the border.

When you enter your store cattle in future, please supply your county and parish holding number and we can check for you and provide the information to buyers on the Early Warning List.

Whilst the new rules look complicated, they will only affect a few buyers from the 12-month edge areas.  For everyone else there will be no change other than the need for us to display the information at the time of sale.

If you have any questions about all this just ring us at Bakewell and we will explain the changes and check your parish interval for you.
