Bakewell Market Report Monday 11th September

After a sweltering weekend it was a fraction cooler and the market attracted 694 cattle and 2,069 sheep.  Buyers, who had completed their harvesting duties were back in action and there was a full line up in all sections.

 

The store & breeding cattle department saw another increase in numbers to 361 head.

Trade was outstanding with steers reaching £1,850 and an all-time record average of £1,171.  The heifers peaked at £1,620 with their average also impressive at £994 missing the £1,000 sound barrier by a whisker.

Feeding bulls sold to £1,400 and a pedigree Sim cow & calf sold at £1,500.

 

There were 122 finished cattle with top figures 318p and £2,187.  The average for the 61 heifers was 255.8 pence giving an indication of the general level of trade.

 

OTM cattle were out in force with a very large entry of 153.

Top figures at 254p/kg and £2,055 per head.  The average was a respectable 164.1 pence.

 

There were 58 calves with bulls to £342 and heifers £338.

Over in the sheep department the 1,716 lambs sold on a great trade with top figures 340p/kg and £162.45.

The SQQ average looked good at 262.9 pence and the overall even better at 264.2 pence.

353 cull sheep with ewes to £166 to average £100.85.

A bumper crop of 153 OTM cattle this week with a larger than normal percentage of B&W on offer.  Trade remains very similar to last week with the leanest cow looking best sold.  Younger and better fed cows however command the top prices with a high of 254 for a 37 mnth old Lim x from William Wilson and a pure Limmy, 56 mnths from Keith Belfield at 250p or £2,025.  All the better cows comfortably over 200p with the bigger sorts over £1500.

Another good show of cattle with some well-bred and fed cattle at the top of the lists, but also a number of ‘store type’ cattle in the entry that would affect the averages.

 

33 Young Bulls ave 249.1p/kg

10 pence dearer on the week and some good bulls on offer.  Sue & Charles Jeffery secured the top call of 308p (£1965) for a tremendous shapey Limmy with Nigel Birch at 300p.  3 big boys topped £2000 including a couple from John Ottewell.  Friesians to 228p/kg.

Less numbers in the clean pens but trade for the quality cattle better.  4 best sold over 300p with George and James Blackshaw at 312p and another at 300p.  Nigel Birch and Peter Gaunt both had 308p with a big one from Rob Hall at £2187 (298p/kg).

A very similar story with well bred cattle very good to sell but a lot of leaner types would have been better sold tested.  Keith Harrop won the day and topped at 318 with George Ede at 312p and Peter Gaunt at 310p.  16 Natives saw Hereford to 278p and Angus to 268p.

A total of 353 cull ewes and rams attracted very brisk bidding for all types but best meated sorts very well bid for.  Ewes peaked at £166/head for Texels and £149 for Suffolks, heavy Mules to just over £100/head and horned ewes over £70/head.  Best Texel rams to peak at £200/head twice and an overall average of £189.78.
