Massive numbers – Superb Trade

A very large entry of 175 cows from 69 vendors from across the Peak District and surrounding areas with one vendor travelling over 130 miles to sell cows at Bakewell! The reason for good numbers is a good fair trade for all cows on offer with purchasers bidding freely for the cattle on offer.  Prices today peaked at an amazing 280p per £2,217 for a super Limousin heifer (35 mnths) from Messrs Boden & Davies with their best cow at 238p or £2261.  All the better fed cows over 200p with a lot of beef cows 180-200p.

Good numbers and trade very good for the best fleshed cattle with a number of “store” types in the entry, but at Bakewell we operate a green (restricted) market so these can be purchased for further feeding to the AFU buyers at ringside.  Best shaped Limousins rose to 300p (£1830) for John Grummett with the smarter goods 270-290p.  16 Natives had Hereford to 263p, Longhorns to 262p, Angus to 262p and Shorthorn to 270p.

66 Heifers ave 268.6p/kg

The same story as the steers with the best flesh good to sell, but leaner or smaller sorts a little harder work, but having said that the heifer average is 4 pence up on the week.  Alex Townroe sold 4 today and won the gold medal today at 321 pence for a lovely red Limousin to gross £1919.  Michael Wynne and Peter Gaunt both had 312 pence for well bred and fed heifers.  20 best heifers topped 290 pence, 13 natives saw Hereford to 250p, Angus to 268p and Shorthorn to 258p.

A good selection with plenty to choose from and fierce competition at all price levels.

Many of the cattle sold in level bunches where appropriate which saw many buyers “pushing the boat out” to secure 5 or 6 at one go.

Angus & Hereford crosses very much in favour.  Top figures remain the domain of the continentals.
