Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 9th October

Last week we were short of stock due to the 6-day rule restrictions which kept some vendors at home after buying at the breeding sheep sales.

This week we were short of pens with 253 vendors consigning stock amounting to 815 cattle and 2,794 sheep.

The Store & Breeding Cattle section had a capacity entry of 524 head with a strong trade from the 11am start to a 2.30pm finish.  Steers reached £1,880, heifers £1,480 and feeding bulls £1,220.

In the breeding section cows & calves peaked at £1,750.

A smaller entry of 96 finished cattle sold on a fantastic trade with demand outstripping supply.  Top figures 331p/kg and £2,213.

The average for the 38 heifers was 288.1 pence and an extraordinary £1,764 per head.

OTM cattle of which there were122 were a fraction easier.  Top figures 222p/kg and £2,079 per head.  The average still looked good at 167.4 pence.

Another good calf entry with 73 forward.  Bulls to £345 and heifers £275.

In the sheep section we had the largest Monday entry for quite some time with 2,794 on offer.

The 1,995 lambs sold to 340 pence and £159.08 per head.

The SQQ average was 257.7 pence with the overall at 259.1p demonstrating the demand for heavier lambs.

A big show of 797 cull sheep saw ewes to £174 with the average at £88.24.

Similar numbers again as the Autumn sales continue and the cow passengers continue to be sold before the onset of Winter.  Trade very much on a par with last week with the average up about 4 pence on the week.  As with last week the best fleshed cows are at a premium with less about and the feeding cows also look well sold to a big company of potential buyers.  Cows peaked today at 222p for a pure Limousin cows from Robert Hardy, Waterhouses.  Better cows 190p plus with a big lot of continental sorts 180-200 and a run of Hereford cows either side of 30 months, but all calved at 160-180p.
