Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 16-10-2023

We seem to have gone from Summer to Winter in the space of about 3 days with night time temperatures dropping 15 degrees and the last two mornings providing the first frosts.

Bakewell was full of stock with 2,570 sheep and 856 cattle on offer.

The store & breeding cattle section was up to capacity with another very large entry of 531 head.

There were the first signs of trade being a shade easier but prices held firm right through to the end.  The top-notch cattle retained their appeal with steers to £1,790 and heifers £1,760 and feeding bulls sold to £1,450.

In the breeding section cows and calves reached £1,820 and young Simmental stock bulls £1,800.

112 finished cattle this week with top figures 324p and £2,204 per head.

‘Our usual barometer of trade’ the average for the 37 heifers looked good at 278.2 pence.

There was another large entry of 162 OTM cattle with top figures 222p and £1,903 per head.

The overall average was a shade less at 155.8 pence.

Calf numbers back a bit at 56 with bulls to £370 and heifers £310.

Over in the sheep section the 1,752 lambs looked well sold with the best on offer to 340p/kg and £159.80 per head.

The SQQ average was 257.7 pence, but the overall average which included the heavier lambs emerged at 259p.

Cull sheep were out in force with 818 on offer, ewes sold to £177 to average £81.65.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

Another ‘full house’ with 531 head on offer.  ‘Back end’ is with us and trade easing slightly as is the case at this time of year.

In most cases prices are much the same as they have been, but the auctioneer has had to work harder to achieve them.

The sale started with some 32 Breeding Cattle which included:

£1720 Lim Cow, 181 mnths & Str Calf R Ogg, Coleby
£1730 B Blue x Cow, 114 mnths & Str Calf R Ogg, Coleby
£1800 Lim x Cow, 57 mnths & Str Calf KCR Lomas & Sons, Brassington
£1640 Sim x Cow, 88 mnths & Bull Calf J Wainwright, Adlington
£1720 Lim x Cow, 55 mnths & Bull Calf JA Nicholls, Wetley Rocks
£1820 Ped B Blue x Cow, 34 mnths & Hfr Calf WJ Sessions, Hilton
£1800 Sim Bull, 16 mnths Storer Smith Simmentals, Uttoxeter

These were followed by 31 Feeding Bulls, to include:

£1450 B Blue x 15 mnths FR Cooper, Wirksworth
£1310 Lim x 15 mnths FR Cooper, Wirksworth
£780 Lim x 4 mnths S Burford, Hayfield
£1190 Lim x 13-22 mnths R & P Ratcliffe, Sudbury
£1050 Angus x 20 mnths R & P Ratcliffe, Sudbury

 301 Steers ave £1,031

A good solid trade for a very varied selection of cattle with some starting to show the weather and therefore priced accordingly.

Plenty of interest in the best with £1400 regularly exceeded.  Angus x very much in favour with Herefords also looking well sold.
