Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2023-10-23

After a very watery weekend which might have encouraged some to build an ark the animals arrived in greater numbers than 2 by 2 with 879 cattle and 2,251 sheep eventually finding their way to Bakewell.

So, despite all the disruption caused by the floods it was business as usual with large entries in all sections and a full complement of buyers operating.

There was an even bigger entry of 561 store cattle which sold on a solid trade from start to finish.  Steers reached £1,800, heifers £1,490 and feeding bulls £1,200.

We are starting to see some cattle showing the effects of the weather, but they still sold well at appropriate prices.

137 finished cattle sold on a decent trade with the best to 330p and £2,180 per head.

The average for the 52 heifers was 263.8 pence a good solid performance.

OTM and Feeding cows were out in force with 148 in total.  Top figures 238p and £1,878 per head.  The overall average was 151.5 pence.

Only 33 calves this week with the weather far from ideal for them.  Bulls to £305 and heifers £400.

In the sheep section there were 1,464 lambs on offer with the best to 324p and £153.90 per head.  The SQQ looked good at 267.5 pence and the overall average 267.5 pence.

There were 787 cull sheep with ewes to £181 to average £88.05.

148 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows overall average 151.5p/kg or £1032

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

Another very large entry of cows this week for 59 vendors.  Bakewell remains the place to sell cows with a full line up of buyers week on week who bid hard for the cows.  Trade would be a little less this week as the deadweight drops make the Bakewell market cows look too dear.  The average fell by just 4 pence on the week with the meated cows taking the biggest hit.  Top cow today was               a wonderful 15-year-old pure Limousin cow from the Wildgoose family at Scarcliffe who sold at 238p for £1851.  Only a handful today over 200p with the bigger fleshed cows generally 170 pence plus.  As always, a big line up of feeding buyers looking for cows with potential.
