Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2023-11-06

Rough weather over the last week has not been kind to stock, but they have kept coming to Bakewell with 902 cattle and 1,670 sheep on offer this week.

One thing to bear in mind is that it is only about 7 weeks to the shortest day – 22nd December after which the days start to lengthen again.

There was another good entry of 488 store & breeding cattle which included a special entry of 55 Limousin cattle from Exton Estates at Oakham.

Trade was sharper than last week with a full line up of buyers operating.  Steers sold to £1,800, heifers £1,470 and feeding bulls £1,120.

In the breeding section cows and calves sold to £1,470 with in-calf heifers to £1,750.

There was another strong entry of 155 finished cattle with the best on offer to 328p and £2,132 per head.  Our usual yardstick of trade the average for the 71 heifers was 272.0p.

Not quite as many OTM cattle as we had last week, but still a respectable entry of 150.

Top figures 233p and £2,138 per head.  The average was 146.4 pence for a very mixed sample.

Another sharp increase in numbers in the calf ring with 109 forward the most we have had in recent times.  Bulls sold to £540 and heifers £280.

Rather less sheep about after last week’s bumper entry.

1,167 lambs sold to 316p and £168.21.  The SQQ average was 271.1p and the overall 273.8p.

503 cull sheep with ewes to £180 and the average £94.99.

Highlight of the day was a special entry of 55 young Limousin cattle from Exton Estates at Oakham.  Steers sold to £1,020 and heifers £920.

It is hardly surprising that cattle are showing signs of recent wet weather, but all types found a ready market with trade generally sharper than last week.
