Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2023-11-20

A busy day made busier still by special entries in the Breeding Cattle section and an abundance of sheep.

Total numbers were an impressive 759 cattle and 2,340 sheep.

There were 441 cattle forward in the store & breeding department with a fantastic trade for the large entry on in-calf heifers from JW & RG Ede with prices exceeding all expectations.

In the regular store section steers reached £1,650 with heifers to £1,750 and feeding bulls £1,220.

Clearly the demand for store cattle is influenced by the excellent returns in the finished ring.  There were 136 finished cattle with top figures 334p/kg and £2,252 per head.  The heifer average for the 50 animals was an excellent 292.8p/kg.

OTM numbers are holding up well at 126 with top figures 229p/kg and £1,709.  The average was a solid 152.0p.

56 calves this week with bulls to £290 and heifers £178.

In the sheep section the 1,678 lambs looked well sold with top figures 318p and £157.25 per head.

The SQQ average was a commendable £263.4p/kg.

A decent entry of 683 cull sheep met plenty of demand with ewes to £177 to average £88.27

Christmas is coming, but so is VET ATTESTATION which starts on 13th December.

If you are selling finished or cull stock on or after that date and you are not Farm Assured it is important that you have a vet attestation number.

If you have already got your vet attestation number then please let us have it, either write in on the top of your Market Declaration or let us have a copy of the form from your vets.
