Bakewell Market Report Monday 27th November

After a frosty weekend with the land drying up nicely it was back to a monsoon with cold and wet conditions.

272 vendors headed to Bakewell with 915 cattle and 1,667 sheep making it a full market day and a decent trade prevailed in all sections.

The Store & Breeding cattle section was very busy with a total of 548 animals changing hands.

There was a full line up of buyers with plenty of interest and tremendous prices achieved.  Steers sold to £1,700, heifers £1,540 and feeding bulls £1,490.

The finished cattle section had a very good day with 171 head on offer.  Top figures 337p and £2,233 per head.

The average for the 89 heifers was a creditable 279.8 pence.

There were 118 OTM and feeding cows which sold on a good solid trade.  Top figures 230p/kg and £1,751 per head.

The overall average emerged at a healthy 152.9 pence.

Calves were out in force with 80 on offer, prices looked good with bulls to £435 and heifers £370.

In the sheep shed 1,271 lambs were forward.  Top figures 299p/kg with top gross price £156.60. The SQQ average was 248.7 pence.

In the cull sheep section there were 441 on offer with ewes to £177 to average £79.94 for a mixed sample.

Similar numbers and trade to last week with cows just week on week.  Best cows easy to sell again with the younger and leanest cows with potential finding plenty of suitors.  Young Limmy cows (4yrs) topped at 228p for feeding with many of the better shaped cows today top side of 190 pence.

A very big show of cattle for the week before the Primestock next week, for which cattle will be needed.  Trade is bubbling away well and there is very strong demand at present.

 

36 Young Bulls ave 242.6p/kg

A good show again and weight is no problem with the Bakewell buyers wanting bulls with loin and flesh.  Best shaped bulls from David Goddard (S&D Fearn) topped at 307p (£1872) with others at 288p and 284p.  John Ottewell had 290p for a good shaped Blue (£2151).  B/W’s to 222p.

A bigger show of clean cattle, many more than was expected but the buyers were wanting cattle today and that showed in the prices.  Geoff Evans topped the steers at 336p (£2009) with others at 310p and 300p.  Micheal Wynne has 318p for his best and Keith Harrop had 310p.  12 natives today with Herefords to 274p, Angus to 270p and Lincolns to 256p with B/W’s up to 218p.

A bumper turnout and some super quality in the entry with some well fed and bred cattle on offer today.  Philip Hooley won the day selling a heifer that would not have looked out of place on Sunday at 337p.  Micheal Wynne had 334p and James Wardman 329p.  12 over 320p and 31 over £3.  14 natives had heifers to 266p, Angus to 284p, Lincolns to 248p and a Beef Shorthorn 240p.

A Larger entry of calves met a stronger trade with more quality on offer overall.

Topping the day was a superb British Blue Bull from Messrs Seals of Shirland at £435. They also had a second to £430.  Blue heifers from the same home reached £370.

Saler bulls from the Hayes family of Shottle reached £250 with Limousins to £252 form the Slack family of Stockport.

Black and white calves were a strong trade to £220 again from Messrs Seals with numerous others in the £50-£100 bracket.

More numbers needed to satisfy demand!

Yet again the very best good to sell, but fewer men about for the half meated horned types.

Best Texels regularly £146-£158 with the strongest £160 plus and a top price of £177.

Better Mules in the £80 range but no Mules in the mid £90’s this week.

Grazing men operating for the stronger frames with finish required.

In the cull rams a fast trade and all categories required.  The best Texels £159 and above with a top price of £184.

Top vendor in the ewes was the Hadfield family, Chamber Farm, Peak Forest.

Top vendor in the rams, Messrs Taylor & Partners at Knutsford.
