Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market
Bakewell Market Report 04-12-2023
“In the Bleak Mid-Winter” describes conditions at Bakewell for the Christmas show weekend.
With 4 inches of fresh snow on Sunday morning the show and carol service looked to be in jeopardy, however, by lunchtime virtually all the livestock entered for showing had arrived and by 2.30pm enough people had arrived for the carol service to be standing room only.
We are very grateful to all those who were able to support the event and fully understand that conditions were such that there were those who were unable to travel.
The same story prevailed on Monday with a lethal mixture of ice and rain which deterred many vendors who we hope will be able to come next Monday instead.
In view of the above we were happy to have entries of 381 cattle and 1,653 sheep.
The show held on Sunday afternoon was a great success with a wonderful selection of stock on display. Full details to be found later in this report.
The store & breeding cattle section took a big hit from the weather and out of a small entry there were a number of absentees. We ended up with 142 head in total and because the majority of buyers were present a cracking trade prevailed. Steers made up to £1,490, heifers £1,200 and feeding bulls £1,120.
The finished cattle section amassed 125 head which included the show cattle. The champion realised 510p/kg and grossed £2,896, but trade was good for all varieties with the 57 heifers averaging a very respectable 335p/kg and £2,027 per head.
See the full details of the show later in this report.
The weather took its toll on the OTM department with only 55 forward. Statistics were, top figures 230p and £1,850 and the average a hefty 157.3p.
58 calves forward, with bulls to £285 and heifers £300.
In the sheep shed the champion lambs realised 445p/kg and grossed £200.25.
The SQQ average looked good at 273.6 pence.
There were 332 cull sheep with ewes to £200 and the average a substantial £117.68.

2 wonderful days for the Christmas Show & Sale
Champion Makes £5.10 or £2,896 Reserve Makes £4.00 or £2,960
The Champion Presentation with The Duke of Devonshire, auctioneer Oliver Hiles, Brian & Sam Woolley (Judges), Jack & PJ Blackshaw (Vendors), The Duchess of Devonshire and Ruby Astley (showing the champion)
Bakewell Primestock Show and sale is fully established as one of the premier two-day primestock events in the country. The format works exceptionally well with the show of the stock being held on the Sunday afternoon with a massive crowd of spectators enjoying the festivities and Carol service. The stock is then held overnight and sold in the relevant sections on the Monday to a large band of buyers who descended from all corners to buy the show stock.
Highlight of the day is unquestionably the sale of the cattle champions with the Champion Beast selling for the top price of the year of 510p/kilo (£2896) and the reserve champion making £4 (£2960) with 6 other superb heifers over £4/kilo.
A massive crowd was present on Sunday 3rd December for the Annual Carol Service, the Cattle & Sheep Show as well as a superb Hog Roast in the market concourse.
The Judging for the cattle this year was carried out by one of the youngest ever judges at the Bakewell Primestock Show, Mr Sam Woolley who was ably assisted by his grandfather Brian who was judging the show 60 years after his first assignment at Bakewell. The family firm of Woolley Bros Wholesale Meats is a wonderful supporter of the market and buy many cattle throughout the year for the abattoir in Sheffield. Sam and Brian worked well together and inspected every animal until they were satisfied with their placings and few could argue that he picked out some fabulous cattle at the top of the lines.
The judges selected a very smart, shapey bullock to win the show. A superbly fed 568kg Black Limousin bred in the North and purchased out of Hexham Mart at the May suckled calf show. He won the steer class and went on to stand overall Champion from local farmer PJ Blackshaw, Bakewell. Both the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire were at ringside and enjoyed watching the judging and engaging with the farmers. They presented their family’s Devonshire Cup at the culmination of
proceedings. The Champion sold on Monday with the Judge backing his
judgement at 510p/kg.
Reserve Champion on the day and Best Opposite Sex to the Champion was a superb powerful black Limousin x heifer that had been shown by Michael & Ellie Wynne. The Bakewell Show trophy was presented in the ring by its president Martin Ambrey. She won the junior heifer class weighed in at 740kg and sold for £4/kilo with the winning bid coming from Laurie Ibbottson.
Reserve Champion from Ellie & Michael Wynne
The High Peak Livestock Society Cup this year was won by local show boys Tom & Jack Gratton, Riber who sold his 616kg red Limousin heifer for 390p (£2402) to the Judge. That was followed by the Robert Walker Trophy class that was again won by The Gratton Family, this time with a black heifer that weighed 660kg and sold for the days top price heifer at 405p (£2673).
The Robert Walker Trophy presentation
A Young Handler class, first introduced in 2015 to recognise the amount of young talent that show cattle at Bakewell. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get cattle trained for showing and if it wasn’t for the interest shown by these young people on their family’s farms, then some of the cattle would not be brought forward for showing. This year there were 4 youngsters, aged between 12 and 16 years, competing for the trophy and it was the youngest of these, Blossom Dickinson (12 years) from Belper who was triumphant
