Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 15-02-2021

With only fog to contend with this week stock numbers were better with 493 cattle and 974 sheep on offer, but still lower than the equivalent market 12 months ago.  Because of the reduced numbers trade was exceptional with both cattle and sheep exceeding all expectations.

There were 262 Store & Breeding cattle, plenty of buying power in operation and remarkable prices achieved.

There is more than enough demand, but we seem to be short of supply.  If you have Store Cattle to sell call Alastair Sneddon on 07973 982441 to book them in for future markets.

Steers sold to £1,260 with an average of £906, heifers to £1,215 average £847 and feeding bulls £1,040 average £703.  Cows & Calves to £1,250 and in calf cows £1,200.

The figures above indicate many smaller and many young Black & White Steers.

Trade for the 107 Finished Cattle remains as strong as ever with the best on offer to 257p and £1,688.

Those figures are impressive, but the average for the 37 heifers at 216.2p demonstrated that trade was outstanding for all types.

Thinking of Selling at Bakewell, have a word with Oliver on 07801 530899

A decent entry of 86 OTM & Feeding Cows with buyers pushing very hard to secure loads.  Top figures 185p and £1,546 with the average a remarkable 135.3p.

38 Calves this week, bulls to £250 and heifers £305.

699 Old Season Lambs forward with top figures 350p/kg and £156.35 per head.

The SQQ average at 295.3p demonstrating that we could have certainly sold many more had they been available.

275 Cull Sheep with ewes to £169 to average a healthy £96.76.

275 Cull Sheep (Auctioneer Mark Elliott)

Yet again all vendors well rewarded and trade sharp with the best continentals and strongest Mules particularly good.

Top Texel at £169/head for Richard Furness who also had Charolais to £165.  The last vendor of the day was the Stevenson’s from Quarndon who had £164 for their strong Texels.  Mark & James Hodgkinson at Harley Grange had £160 twice.

The Mules very good to sell to a top of £100 for Needhams with other better sorts between £85 and £90/head.  The horned types were not the biggest of frame but carried nice flesh and topped just over £60/head.

Cull rams a strong trade to a top of £138 for Alex Edwards’ Texel with another from Mr Perkins at £119.
