Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market
Bakewell Market Report 2023-12-18
Decent entries in all departments for the last market before Christmas.
Please note that there is NO market on Thursday 21st December and the next fixture in Bakewell is on Thursday 28th December.
This was the first Monday when VAN numbers were required and it is pleasing to note that the vast majority of vendors in the finished and cull sections had obtained the necessary number or were Farm Assured and therefore did not need one.
A hearty vote of thanks from the Bagshaws team to vendors for making the transition so smooth.
The store cattle section had a seasonal entry of 189 head and a full line up of buyers with the result that trade was very fast indeed.
Steers sold to £1,680, heifers £1,590 and in calvers £1,480.
There was no lack of confidence amongst bidders and excellent prices were achieved.
Some of the store enthusiasm was due to the level of trade in the finished cattle section where 102 head saw top figures of 332p and £2,176 per head.
The average for the 42 heifers was a healthy 287.6p and the per head average for the 40 steers was a remarkable £1,869.
There were 82 OTM and Feeding Cows with top figures 228p and £1,702 per head the average was up a bit at 154.1p.
39 calves this week with bulls to £390 and heifers £295.
Things were busy in the sheep shed with 1,309 lambs on offer.
Top figures 330p/kg and £156.33 per head.
The SQQ average looked good at 278.9p.
There was 529 cull sheep which sold very well with ewes to £208 to average £103.09.
All in all, it has been a great year at Bakewell Market, may we take this opportunity to thank all our supporters both vendors and purchasers and to wish you all a Merry Christmas and we sincerely hope you have a prosperous New Year.

82 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows overall average 154.1p/kg or £1024
(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)
Bigger and better numbers than I expected for the last sale of the year and more trade about with the average up and the buyers keen again for cows. I expect that after the Christmas break cows could be dearer still and they will be wanted for the next sale on Tuesday 2nd January.
Today there were no best cows on offer, but 3 younger OTM types made over 200p with best cows at 197p for Mosley & Co & B Langton.

To sell Barren Cows or Finished Cattle in the Prime ring at Bakewell you need to be either:
- Farm Assured
- Have a VAN number from your vet
- To sign a Farmer Declaration to say that you have had a vet visit in the last 12 months. There does seem some resistance from some abattoirs for this option and FARMER DECLARATIONS will come to an end in April.
Best Advice:
Get a VAN number now if you are not Farm Assured
