Bakewell Market Report 2024-01-02
Respectable entries of stock in most departments for the Tuesday Market following New Year’s Day.
Those vendors who chose to consign stock were well rewarded with decent prices in all sections.
Only a handful of store cattle which sold very well demonstrating that confidence is high and demand good.
If you have cattle tested and ready to sell, do not hesitate, book them in.
There were only 26 animals on sale with B Blue x Strs, 19 mnths to £1,020 and B Blue x Hfrs, 19 mnths to £1,000 and of the younger cattle £650 for Lim x suckled calf steers, 4-6 mnths to £650 and heifers £630.
There were 31 calves with bulls to £312 and heifers £190.
The finished cattle was well supported with 66 head on sale.
Top figures 335.0p and £2,382 per head.
The average for the 25 heifers was an excellent 309.7p with the overall average for all 66 animals at 295.9p.
Only 30 cull cows forward with top figures 206p and £1,469. The overall average a useful 157.4 pence.
In the sheep section numbers were close to normal with 1,069 Hoggs on sale.
Top figures 324p and £180.59 per head.
The SQQ looked very healthy at 281.4 pence.
There were 280 cull sheep with ewes to £224 to average £114.40.

Happy New Year to all customers in the barren ring and a new season brings good news with cows dearer as expected with renewed orders at ringside. Just 6 continentals today with 4 Native suckler and 20 Dairy cows in the entry, a UTM slip Friesian heifer from Rusty Mycock topped at 206p with strong cows from Belper Skip Hire at 198p or £1469. Strong B/W cows sold up to 182p for a strong cow from Geoff & Malcolm Limer, Taddington.

New Year – New price structure, with cattle simply as dear as I have ever had them with all the regulars either there or represented.
2 Young Bulls
Both B/W and sold up to 197p/kg for a Holstein.
39 Steers ave £291.4p/kg
Some outstanding cattle today, but just unreal to sell with the top 19 over 300p and 10 over 320p and a top price of 331p, for one of a super run from Charlie Asher (TB Dalton) who had others at 329, 328p etc. 17 North of £2000 today with Roger Ardern at the top with a well-fed Angus to £2382 (316p). 9 Natives today saw Hereford also to 296p, Shorthorns to 294p and Lincolns to 270p. 8 B/W had Fleck to 274p (£2022).

Wow! Just look at the average and all the prices, 19 made over 300p meaning that just 6 fell under that price. Keith Harrop led the race for New Year honours at 335 and 328p (twice) for suckler bred continentals with the butchers well represented at ringside looking to re stock their fridges after good Christmas sales.

Demand very brisk right from the very first pen with best butchers lambs to 324p/kg, lightweight sorts to 323p/kg and heavy butchers lambs to 317p/kg and overweights 312p/kg. One vendor with 3 lots of Beltex/Texel lambs averaged 314.57p/kg. Top gross of over £180/head with 10 pens grossing over £150/head. Overall average 282.81p/kg, which included a run of Swale lambs.

Just 280 cull ewes and rams attracted very brisk bidding with best pure Texels to £224. A run of 50 mainly Texel x grazed ewes sold to £156 to average £126 which included 1 pen of Mules and 1 pen of Gritstones. Best Suffolk ewes to £146 and Mules to £108.
