Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market
Bakewell Market Report 08-01-2024
A decent turnout for the first Monday market of the New Year with 609 cattle and 1,803 sheep on sale.
The floods seem to be subsiding and the market entrance drive was passable for the first time since Christmas.
Plenty of buyers present with several making their first appearance of the New Year.
Trade in all cattle sections very strong and sheep results looking good too.
There were 295 Store & Breeding Cattle forward with trade as dear as we have seen it for quite some time. Steers peaked at £1,770 with heifers at £1,520.
What is remarkable is that steers averaged £1,015 and heifers £1,020 despite the fact that there were a good many young cattle in the entry.
In calf Lim x heifers sold to £1,980.
Finished cattle were out in force with a total of 133 forward with top figures of 345p and £2,334.
It is hardly surprising that store buyers are keen to top up their yards.
The average for the 64 heifers was an outstanding 298p, with the average gross price a remarkable £1,737.
A useful entry of 124 OTM cattle saw trade up a notch.
Top figures of 245p and £2,240 with the average looking good at 164.9 pence.
Calves were out in force with 57 on offer, bulls selling to £452 and heifers £230.
Over in the sheep department there was a good solid trade for the 1,313 hoggs.
Top figures 324p and £182.24 per head.
The SQQ average was 271.8 pence, back a little on the week.
The were 490 cull sheep with ewes to £214 to average £106.01.
