Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Another strong gathering of stock in all departments with trade reported strong for all on offer.

An increased entry of 391 store & breeding cattle saw a strong line up of potential purchasers and trade remaining exceptional for all with steers to £1,860 and heifers at £1,810.

Over in the finished department trade continued at the recent excellent rates with steers to 327p/kg and heifers to 325p/kg with a top trade in the lump just a shade under £2,600.

OTM’s very similar to last week with a top price of 279p/kg and £2,336 per head.

More sheep on offer with trade a little easier than last week but still very respectable with an average of 279.28p/kg and to a top of 332p/kg.

Cull ewes once again looking well sold to a top of £210.

50 Calves continuing to sell at recent strong rates.

More on offer and a near identical average to last week with cows very dear once again.  Cow meat is in short demand and cows are wanted everywhere.  Whilst this is the case the best way to market your cows is on their legs at Bakewell.  18 best sorts topped £2/kilo with a couple of best 1 calf (under 36 mnths) Limmy from Dan Byard at 279 and 250p, and a big pure bred Limmy (1 calf) from Neil Pearson at 244p (£1703).  Best sorts over 200p.  30 cows today sold for further feeding to a variety of different accounts with farmers looking to add value to the cows.  Look at today’s results.

More about and trade remains very strong with no sign of any January blues.

22 Young Bulls ave 251.9p/kg

The best fed and bred cattle are unbelievable to sell with best fed sorts up to 318p (£2276) for David Goddard (S & D Fearn) with others at 310p (£2535) and 302p (£2228).  John Ottewell had 314p for his best with a big lad from Clark Farms at £2598 (296p).  11 B/W today sold to 234p.

Strong money for all with some well fleshed cattle on offer.  Suckler bred continentals topped the day at 327p for Louise Wainwright, Poynton with the Mellor family at 324 and 323p and Don Lownds at 322 and 321p with all the best over £2000.  16 natives today had Angus to 287p, Herefords to 252p and Longhorns to 288p.  4 B/W’s sold to 239p.

Seriously dear again with all the best sorts over £3/kilo.  Dan Byard topped the heifers today at 325 and 324p for 2 posh suckler bred Limmys selling to butchers at Sheffield and Manchester.  13 natives today had Hereford to 242, Angus to 278 and Shorthorns to 284p.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Meg Elliott)

A much larger entry with 391 forward including several large consignments.

Some wonderful cattle in the entry contributing to the highest average for Monday steers that anyone can recall.

As an example, the top price of £1,860 for a 21-month-old Lim x from WP Carson & Son of Grange Mill was part of a consignment of 14 Lim x & B Blue x Steers which average an amazing £1,786.

1331 Lambs & 482 Ewes & Rams (Auctioneer Peter Oven)

Another excellent entry of 1813 sheep included 1331 lambs.  Demand very good throughout with best butchers lambs to 332p/kg, heavyweights to 309p/kg and a tremendous pen of overweights sold at 320p/kg and grossed over £173/head.  The overall market average 279.28p/kg.

A good entry of ewes and trade just a little stronger for all categories but the smaller show of the best classy Texels.

Top price of £210 for two big Texels from the Hadfield family at Cold Eaton receiving £179 for both Texels.

Generally, Mules and Suffolk crosses good to sell with the best Mules well over £100 and Suffolks over £140.

Buyers for everything with the whole entry averaging just short of £107.50.

Keen competition for all in the slaughter rams with the biggest and best fleshed over £150 to a top of £167 and £168, Leicester tups to £148.
