Bakewell Market Report 29-01-2024

Another strong gathering of stock in all departments with trade reported strong for all on offer.

 

An increased entry of 391 store & breeding cattle saw a strong line up of potential purchasers and trade remaining exceptional for all with steers to £1,860 and heifers at £1,810.

 

Over in the finished department trade continued at the recent excellent rates with steers to 327p/kg and heifers to 325p/kg with a top trade in the lump just a shade under £2,600.

 

OTM’s very similar to last week with a top price of 279p/kg and £2,336 per head.

 

More sheep on offer with trade a little easier than last week but still very respectable with an average of 279.28p/kg and to a top of 332p/kg.

Cull ewes once again looking well sold to a top of £210.

 

50 Calves continuing to sell at recent strong rates.

116 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows overall average 174.3p/kg or £1169

More on offer and a near identical average to last week with cows very dear once again.  Cow meat is in short demand and cows are wanted everywhere.  Whilst this is the case the best way to market your cows is on their legs at Bakewell.  18 best sorts topped £2/kilo with a couple of best 1 calf (under 36 mnths) Limmy from Dan Byard at 279 and 250p, and a big pure bred Limmy (1 calf) from Neil Pearson at 244p (£1703).  Best sorts over 200p.  30 cows today sold for further feeding to a variety of different accounts with farmers looking to add value to the cows.  Look at today’s results.

The best fed and bred cattle are unbelievable to sell with best fed sorts up to 318p (£2276) for David Goddard (S & D Fearn) with others at 310p (£2535) and 302p (£2228).  John Ottewell had 314p for his best with a big lad from Clark Farms at £2598 (296p).  11 B/W today sold to 234p.

A good entry of ewes and trade just a little stronger for all categories but the smaller show of the best classy Texels.

Top price of £210 for two big Texels from the Hadfield family at Cold Eaton receiving £179 for both Texels.

Generally, Mules and Suffolk crosses good to sell with the best Mules well over £100 and Suffolks over £140.

Buyers for everything with the whole entry averaging just short of £107.50.

Keen competition for all in the slaughter rams with the biggest and best fleshed over £150 to a top of £167 and £168, Leicester tups to £148.
