Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 12-02-2024

A good solid market with 687 cattle and 959 sheep on offer.

The store and breeding cattle section was well supported with 387 head forward and trade maintain recent exceptional levels.

Steers reached £1,820 with the average an extraordinary £1,198 for a sample including a good many young cattle.

Likewise, the heifers which peaked at £1,640, but averaged a remarkable £1,028 for all comers.

Cows and calves were keenly sought with the best to £2,000 and feeding bulls were also wanted with 6-7 month traditional Herefords in a bunch of 7 making an astonishing £900.

The message in the light of this information is that it is a good time to sell store cattle.  If you have any queries do not hesitate to give Alastair Sneddon a call on 07973 982441.

There was a decent turnout of 149 finished cattle – good to see Bakewell’s numbers keeping up.

Top figures 336p and £2,372 per head.  The average for the 65 heifers was a solid 284.3 pence.

Any questions speak to Oliver Hiles on 07801 530899.

The useful entry of 113 OTM and feeding cows looked well sold with the best to 254p and £2,114 per head.  The average a hefty 171.1p.

Just 38 calves this week with bulls to £350 and heifers £305.

Sheep numbers down possibly due to recent wet weather which is holding back finishing of both hoggs and feeding ewes.

As a consequence of the shortage the trade has taken a lift.  Top prices for hoggs 348p/kg and £180.32.

The SQQ average emerged at a very respectable 321p and it is interesting to note that the average gross value of a hogg in the 39-45kg bracket was £137.73.

For the next weight range 45.6-52kg it was a significant £151.97.

In the cull sheep section, there was 303 head on offer with ewes to £190 to average £92.77.
