Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-02-26

A good solid market day with some decent entries of 736 cattle and 1,503 sheep.

All sections reported a strong trade with recent tremendous prices maintained or exceeded.

The store and breeding cattle department was well stocked with 483 head in total.  Trade was outstanding with top figures – steers to £1,880, heifers £1,760 and feeding bulls £1,200.  Need we say more??

If you have stores ready to sell do not hesitate to give Alastair Sneddon a call on 07973 982441.

The finished cattle section looked good with 142 on offer.  Top figures 344p/kg and £2,529/head.

Our barometer of trade the heifer average of 290.7p for 79 animals demonstrated the level of demand.

OTM cattle in shorter supply with only 81 forward.  Trade much as last week with top figures 248p and £2,240 with the average a healthy 179.6p.

Only 30 calves, they seem to be scarce, but clearly wanted, bulls to £395 and heifers £390.

Over in the sheep shed there were 1057 hoggs finding a ready market with top figures 268p and £202.64 per head.

The SQQ average was 331.8p for an end of season sample.  The 493 hoggs in the 39-45kg averaged £141.52 per head.

In the cull sheep section, there were 426 head with ewes to £199 to average £107.90.

81 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall average 179.7p/kg or £1209

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

A few less on offer with a “stand on” trade with cattle little unchanged on the week after the big jump last time.  The trade remains there for the best fleshed cows, whether beef or ex dairy types but meat is very much the order of the day.  Best types still comfortably north of £2/kilo with a high price of 248p (£1458) for a 1 calf 28 mnth old Limmy from Messrs Austin, Parwich with the older cows to 239p (£1955) for a good blue from Mark Froggatt, Blithbury.  Plenty of leaner cows, hard wintered and store type cows on offer and these were readily bid for by the keeping buyers at ringside.

A reduced entry but trade strong for all types.  Bulls saw a B Blue at £395 and heifers of the same breed at £390.

A number of purchasers going home short of requirements today and many more could have been sold to vendors’ advantage.

446 Cull Sheep

Another good entry with trade good and the Mules particularly showing an increase in trade.

Best Mules regularly over £107/head with the very biggest around £120.

In the best continentals top call £199 for the Rushtons at Pike Hall with a long Texel with the Simpsons and Paul Chadfield both over £192 per head.

Big Suffolk ewes over £165 with the very best over £175.

All smaller hill types good to sell including Lonks, Grits and Herdwicks with some Lonk ewes close to £90 looking exceptionally well sold.

Slaughter tups needed with a top of £173 and £170 for Texels, but in fairness the plainer sorts looked dearer on the day than the best.

Generally, more sheep required to fulfil demand.

Ewes to £199                Ave £107.90

Rams to £173                Ave £136.55
