Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2021-02-22

With Spring in the air and double figure temperatures over the weekend there were larger entries at Bakewell with 650 Cattle and 1,359 Sheep on offer.

The Drop & Go regime is still firmly in place and we thank vendors for their co-operation in this regard.

We need the space around the rings to keep buyers safe until such time as the rules change.

We had a significant larger entry of Store Cattle this week with a total of 401 on offer.

Trade remains just as strong with steers to £1,400 and heifers £1,285, feeding bulls topped at £980.

In the breeding stock section cows & calves sold to £1,220 and in calvers £1,250.

Following on from the tremendous sale last Friday for suckler bred stores we are now taking entries for the next HPLS sale on Friday 19th March.  Any queries speak to Oliver Hiles on 07801 530899

Finished cattle numbers have been good with some 133 head all sold with excellent prices achieved.  Top figures 265p and £1,635 with the average for the 49 heifers 209.9p a very healthy figure in view of the mixed quality of the entry.

95 OTM & Feeding Cows with another outstanding trade, top figures 190p and £1,905.

The average price per head for cows was £908 which puts matters into context.  The overall average was a remarkable 135.2p

Calf numbers surprisingly low at this time of year but what was on offer was well sold with both bulls and heifers peaking at £370.

The sheep department was busier this week with trade remaining very brisk.

The 1,008 old season lambs again met an outstanding trade with the best on offer to 332p and 163.7p

The SQQ average emerged at a very healthy 283.9p.

More cull ewes about this week with a top figure of £170 for the 351 head on offer.

The average for ewes will be the highest achieved for some time at £100.34
