Bakewell Market Report 2024-03-11

An excellent gathering of stock with a strong trade reported in all departments with a total of 809 cattle and 1608 Sheep.

487 Store Cattle on offer with no let up in trade  sold to a large gathering of prospective purchasers and credible top prices of £1880 for Steers, £1550 for Heifers and £1305 for Bulls.

Finished Cattle numbers out in force with an increased entry of 153 with trade equally as dear as last week seeing tops of 351p/kg or £2345per head.

OTM numbers also up at 126 with trade reported as being up on the week peaking at 272p/kg and £2173 per head.

Increased sheep numbers with no let up in the hogg trade at unprecedented levels with 12 pens upwards of 400p/kg to return an overall average of 377.44p/kg and top prices of 414p/kg and £230 per head. Overall average £165.40 per head.

Cull ewes a strong trade for a lesser sample than seen in recent weeks to a top of £190 whilst a increased entry of calves at 47 on offer, to a top of £390.

More on offer again as the word gets out that Bakewell is the place to market your older cows and overage cattle. The overall average up by 6 pence on the week or about £60 / head tells the whole story with cow meat very much in vogue at present, please come and see for yourself and compare our prices to your regular way of selling, I don’t think that you would be disappointed, 36 cattle today topped £2/kilo (as many as we have had for a long while) with a tremendous Blue x feeding cow from Steven jones at 272p/kg (£1610) with a run of overage next in line at 232p/kg – 257p/kg from Ollie Black and Jonathon Salisbury with best older cows in the 220’s

Unbelieveable prices from start to finish with all the wholesalers fireing hard and no signs of any deadweight drops in Bakewell.  Steven Wells won the race and sold to 343p and 338p for his 2 Blues.  Mark Sweetmore had 341p and Peter gaunt 340p. 8 natives saw Herefords to 271p and Angus to 282p with 10 B & W Steers up to 236p for a fed Holstein.

A very good show of 1608 sheep included 1192 hoggs. Demand was very strong right from the start with the first pen selling at 410p/kg with 14 pens breaking the 400p barrier. Best butchers lambs peaked at 414p/kg with heavy weight butchers lambs to 409p/kg and overweights to 390p/kg. Top gross of £230 per head with overall hogg average over £165 per head.

More Customers out and trade faster than last week with the best meated types and mules very good to sell.

Better mules regularly over £109 with heavy types well over £120 per head. Yet again meated hill ewes, Gritstones etc good to sell with the better end over £100.

 

In the continentals a top of £190 for the Hawksworth family at Shardlow with others at £173 for John Spillane & family. To be fair there were no pure, strong, long best forward and over £200 would have been easily achievable.

 

All the tups good to sell with the best 3 averaging over £180 and Gritstones to £117.
