Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-03-18

A good solid day’s business with 727 cattle and 1,784 sheep on offer.

We have received a number of compliments about the white lines recently applied to the cattle and sheep docks to aid reversing.

There will be a considerable saving in fuel as many drivers are now able to hit the slot first time, something that has not always been the case in the past.

A good show of 458 stores with more young cattle in the sample.

Strong demand right through with steers to £1,750, heifers to £1,520 and feeding bulls £1,710.

Wet ground conditions continue to give concern not least for those who normally have turned cattle out by this date.

Fewer finished cattle on offer as a result of purchases made last Friday at the HPLS sale which has triggered the 6 day stand still for a number of regular vendors.

Trade looked good again with top figures 354p and £2,250 per head.

The overall average for the 54 heifers was a solid 289.2p.  The per head average for the 29 steers was a remarkable £1,960.

A decent turnout of 116 OTM and Feeding Cows.

Top figures 280p and £2,650 per head with the average a very respectable 184.1p making an average cow £1,207.

63 calves this week with bulls to £420 and heifers £225.

Plenty of action in the sheep shed with an increased entry of 1,784.

There were 1,311 finished hoggs hitting top figures 496p/kg and an astonishing £248.50 per head.  The SQQ average for a mixed sample was 389.1p making a typical hogg in the 39-45kg bracket no less than £170.54 per head.

The cull sheep section attracted 462 head with ewes selling to £270 to average £119.40.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneers Alastair Sneddon & Meg Elliott)

Another useful entry of 458 stores maintained recent levels of trade with strong cattle in short supply.

There was a higher proportion of younger sorts in the entry finding a ready market as the sample prices will reveal.

The sale commenced with 32 Feeding Bulls sample prices as follows:

£1710 Char 16 mnths Cox Bros, Gt Longstone
£1700 Char 15 mnths Cox Bros, Gt Longstone
£390 Fries 7-8 mnths D Byard, Clay Cross

£760 Hfd 10 mnths TA & DE Spooner, Leek
£920 Hfd 13 mnths Ingram Bros, Atherstone

247 Steers ave £952

No slackening of trade, but a different profile of the entry with many more young cattle and a shortage of the big short finish types.  Have we had them already or are they still out there?
