Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-03-25

After a couple of better days, it is back to Winter again, however, the miserable weather did not deter vendors and there were 819 cattle and 1,727 sheep on offer at Bakewell.

Don’t forget next week the market is on Tuesday.

The store and breeding cattle section was busy with 465 head forward and the fact that Spring must be round the corner brought extra buyers to the sale.

The result a wonderful trade from start to finish.  Steers sold to £1,880, heifers £1,820 and feeding bulls £1,560.

Younger cattle sold exceptionally well with not enough top-notch sorts to satisfy the   specimen hunters.

The demand for finished cattle remains strong and even with an entry of 168 head prices were still outstanding.  Top figures 346p/kg and £2,576 per head.

The 77 heifers averaged 295.2p and £1,752 per head.

In the OTM department there were 128 on offer, trade remains at recent outstanding     levels with top figures 250p/kg and £2,356 per head.  The average much as recent weeks at 176.7 pence making an average OTM cow £1,203.

58 calves with bulls to £340 and heifers £325.

It was the Easter Lamb Show which attracted a good turnout of 98 Spring lambs.  Full details of the show can be found later in this report, but top figures were 710p/kg and £288.43 per head, the average was 532.7p.  There were 1,138 hoggs on offer with top figures 444p/kg and £221 Per head.

The SQQ average was 365.7p.  482 cull sheep were well sold with ewes to £265 to average £124.75

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneers Alastair Sneddon & Meg Elliott)

A useful entry of 465 head sold on a great trade with plenty of highlights to report.
