Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-05-20

A busy day in advance of the Bank Holiday and the Tuesday market next week with 803 cattle and 1,400 sheep on offer.

There was another exceptional entry of store & breeding cattle with a total of 476 head forward.

With the temperature rather more like Summer and grass in the fields demand was again very strong.

Steers sold to £1,740 with heifers to £1,640 and feeding bulls to £1,280.

In the breeding section cows and calves sold to £1,770 and mature 84-month-old Limousin stock bull exceeded his slaughter value and went on breeding duties for £2,460.

An excellent entry of 169 finished cattle almost maintained recent levels of trade despite the increased numbers.  Top results 338p/kg and £2,487 per head.

There were 78 heifers forward with the overall average 272.9p almost the exact same figure as last week.

OTM cattle were out in force with 107 on offer. Top figures 258p/kg and £2,220 with the average looking good at 189.5p, so in general trade was much as last week.

51 calves and plenty of interest with bulls to £465 and heifers £330.

Over in the sheep department the more clement weather has really helped the Spring lamb numbers with 289 on offer this week.  Top figures 560p/kg and £236.25 per head.

The SQQ average was 428.6p and the average gross price for a lamb in the 39-45 kg weight range was a hefty £183.22.

Hogg numbers slipping away with only 702 forward and quality very mixed.  Top figures 438p/kg and £256.50 per head.

The SQQ average 365.6p.

A decent entry of 406 cull sheep with ewes to £226 to average £116.99.

107 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall ave 189.5p/kg or £1241

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

An excellent entry again this week and trade generally very similar with the average back just a bit but not quite such as good a show of quality.  Top call today was 258p for a young 31-month-old keeping cow from John Cantrell, Macc, with the top cow from Messrs Ball at 238p (£1732).  Buyers for all today with the feeding men bidding well to secure cows with potential to improve their value.
