Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-06-03

A dry day forecast and the prospects of silaging kept some farmers at home, but there was still a decent turnout at Bakewell with 784 cattle and 1,096 sheep on offer.

Despite no cattle or sheep being shown, there were blue, red and yellow rosettes on show as prospective candidates all attended market at the same time on the same day seeking our votes.  Surely this was not a conspiracy.

494 store & breeding cattle sold on a superb trade with several new buyers operating and some excellent prices achieved all helped by some exceptional animals in the entry.

Steers sold to £1,900, heifers £1,660 and feeding bulls £1,390.  In the breeding section cows and calves hit £1,680 and in calf heifers sold to £1,700.

So, plenty of trade for all comers, if you have stores to sell, give us a call.

Finished cattle out in reasonable numbers with 106 in total.  Top prices 344p/kg and £2197 per head.

Generally, trade a shade less with deadweight procurers doing their best to reduce prices.

The average for the 47 heifers was a solid 280.1 pence and the per head average for the heifers £1,700, so returns still looking good at Bakewell.

101 OTM cattle with prices remaining very strong indeed.  Top figures 256p and £2,197 per head.

Overall average 194.3p and the per head average for cows a remarkable £1,255.

83 calves, the most we have had for some time.  Plenty of interest with bulls to £495 and heifers £500.

In the sheep department hogg numbers continue to slip away and lambs increase.

This week the lambs outnumbered the hoggs with 412 Spring lambs on offer.

Prices a shade easier top figures for lambs 468p/kg and £201.62 per head.

The SQQ average 407.4 pence.

Trade for the 345 hoggs reflects in the mix of quality on offer.

Top figures 362p/kg and £201.11 per head.

The SQQ settled at 304.2 pence.

Cull sheep out in force with 339 forward.  Ewes sold to £177 to average £121.20.
