Bakewell Market Report 2024-06-17

Numbers down somewhat as we pass the middle of June with the depressing thought that in another week or so the nights will be drawing in.

613 cattle and 700 sheep on offer with lamb numbers well down on the year because of the cold wet season.

Store and breeding cattle were present in good numbers with 350 on offer.  Trade was very strong for all types with steers to £1,730 average £1,042 and heifers to £1,600 average £970.

Feeding bulls topped out at £1,100.

In the breeding section cows and calves sold to £1,620.

There was a decent show of 120 finished cattle with top figures 329p and £2,362.

The 55 heifers averaged 272.2p and a healthy £1,682 per head.

OTM cattle were out in force with 112 on offer.  Top figures 258p/kg and £2,557 per head.  The average looked good at 183.4 pence.

Calf numbers down at 31 with both bulls and heifers peaking at £390.

In the sheep section numbers were down after last weeks larger entry due to the Muslim festival.

There were 393 Spring lambs with top figures 440p and £201.12 per head.  The SQQ average was 368.8 pence.

Only 49 hoggs on offer with erupted teeth becoming more numerous each week.

Hoggs sold to 338p and £183.68 per head to average 292p.

254 cull sheep with ewes to £209 to average £124.73

Just a handful more with trade very much up to scratch with the average a few pence off last week with a higher percentage of B/W’s about.  Bulls also look better sold today.  All the better sorts comfortably over 200p and a high of 258p for a super dry and lean red Limousin from Jonathon Hall (1 calf) that sold for feeding to one of the many skilled operators at ringside.  Big cows generally £1500 + and up to £1784 for a big Simmy from Messrs Renshaw & Brassington.

Less on offer as expected with the overall average up 5 pence on the equivalent week last year.  A full line up of buyers all wanted cattle but the price is very much in their minds.

 

19 Young Bulls ave 256.5p/kg

Power and shape is the order of the day with the big bulls certainly adding up.  David Goddard won the race and topped at 300p/kg or £2016 for a shapey Limmy with the best 9 all over £2000.  B/W sold to 225p for Mark Sweetmore with a Friesian and Dairy Shorthorns to 231p for Mark Ludlam.

Some excellent quality and weight on offer with 10 over 300p with the biggest 7 over £2000.  A tremendous run of 4 B Blue x Steers won many favours from DS Edwards and topped at 329p (£2362) 328p (£2236) 318p (£2219) and 317p (£2238) all were well fed, full of meat and shapey.  Geoff Evans had 318 for his best with other good sorts over 300p.  Natives to 264p for an Angus from David Gyte.

A similar story to the steers with the well-fed heifers with shape what they all wanted.  Nigel Birch had a beauty a Limmy today at 324p (£2008) and was purchased by Dave on behalf of Meakin Bros, quality butchers in Leek, Staffs.  Ben Langton had a couple of posh Limmys at 320 and 315p with a trio of vendors at 317p.  10 Natives saw Herefords to 259p for Mark Walker.
