Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Given the excellent grass harvesting conditions a quieter trade was anticipated in all sections but still a respectable gathering of stock with a total of 487 cattle and 709 sheep on offer with trade reported brisk in all departments.

The OTM & finished cattle sections assembled good numbers given the volume of grass mown, with a total of 85 OTM’s.  OTM trade reported as strong and very much in line with last week returning an average of 182p/kg and £2082 in the lump.

Whilst best finished cattle looking well sold, some of the lesser quality possibly a little easier.  Tops of £321p/kg and £2245 for heifers and 324p/kg and £2388 for steers.

A little quieter in the store cattle department and not surprising give the time of year and weather conditions, but still no let up in trade with all types meeting keen demand.  In the breeding department tops of £1830 for cows and calves and £2080 for a stock bull, steers reaching £1600 and heifers to £1570.

A reasonable gathering of 522 finished sheep saw trade up a level on last week to return an average of 393p/kg with tops of 448p/kg and £225 per head.

A reduced entry of 186 cull sheep but trade strong for all to a top of £185.

An increased entry of 48 calves saw a flying trade with bulls to £470 and heifers £385.

85 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall ave 184.8p/kg or £1211

Less about with hay down in every field in the district it was little surprise.  Trade remains strong for the best bred and fed cattle and mostly over £3/kg.

13 Young Bulls ave 264.7p/kg

Certainly not enough for the trade with a couple of best bulls over £3/kg for Alan Maier with a similar bull from John Ottewell at 296p.

Good cattle are certainly the best to sell with a cracking run of 4 red Limousins from John Grummett at 324,318, 315 and 314p/kg, with other good sorts over £3 including a big posh BB from Ian Brown that added up well to £2388.  10 Natives had Angus to 280p and Hereford to 264p.

Just 40 and something for everyone with big and small and best shaped to plain cattle.  17 Natives today found the top price of 321p for a superb chocolate coloured Angus from Neil Brocklehurst with Clive Bacon’s Lim at 318 and a smaller posh Lim at 310 for Geoff Evans.

Numbers a little less this week with 264 passing through the ring with many making the most of the weather and getting some silaging done.  Trade nevertheless was swift throughout.

A small entry of 708 sheep included 456 new season lambs with demand very brisk for all types.  Best butchers lambs peaked at 448p/kg with heavyweights to 428p/kg and overweights to 390p/kg, resulting in a top gross of £225.70/head.  Overall market average 393.62p/kg.
