Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-07-01

A busier Monday following last weeks good harvesting weather with a total of 571 cattle and 1059 sheep on offer and generally busy in all departments.

Finished cattle back up to normal numbers with a total of 140 on offer together with 94 OTM’s and Oliver reporting that finished cattle were dearer than last week and the OTM’s very similar.

Steers peaked at 320p/kg and £2124 per head with heifers to 325p/kg and £2091. Bulls to £309p/kg and a total of £2392 in the lump, whilst OTM’s sold to tops of 241p/kg and grossing a top of £2263.

Store cattle trade continued at recent strong rates and were preceded by a good entry of 45 breeding cattle, which created substantial interest with cows and bull calves to £2080 and those with heifer calves to £1980, both comprising a special entry from DR Rowland & NJ Woodward, Castleton.

The store cattle trade was possibly up on recent weeks with steers to £1865 and heifers to £1820.

A substantially increased entry of sheep this week with a total of 733 finished lambs with trade back in line with the National trend to average 327.99p/kg, but still a respectable average per head of £139.95.

The 251cull sheep saw trade up on the week to a top of £218 (ave £134/head) whilst a slightly increased entry of calves saw a flying trade with bulls to £400 and heifers to £390.

Ashbourne Young Farmers were also in the market raising money for the Brain Tumour Charity where they raised £300, we have agreed to match the amount.

They are also taking part in a charity bike ride on 27th July, where they will be visiting every young farmers club in Derbyshire. We wish them good luck with this on behalf of everyone at Bagshaws

94 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall ave 181.4p/kg or £1197

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

A few more about and trade very much ‘stand on’ from last week with the average very similar on the week.  A good line up of buyers today with all the better cattle north of £2/kilo with the best and younger sorts 220p plus.  Best price today was a young Charolais (33 mnths) at 241p or £1421 with a young cow from Andrew & Helen Carr at 238p (£1461).  Cows remain good to sell and I don’t see them dropping as they have done in other years at this time.  The advice I would give is if you have them to sell, then do so.  For any advice or a free, no obligation farm visit, give me a call on 07801 530899.
