Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-07-15

A busy day for the time of year with 604 cattle and 1,184 sheep on sale.

There were 349 head of store and breeding cattle forward, a pleasing number for what is usually a quiet spell.

Trade in all sections reported to be good with no sudden drops or nasty surprises.

Trade for the store & breeding cattle was even stronger than it has been over recent weeks when it seemed that they could not go any dearer.  We were all wrong and prices today have been distinctly ‘off the clock’

Without any particularly special cattle in the entry steers reached £1,640 but averaged £1,134 despite a considerable number of reared dairy bred calves in the sample.  Heifers reached £1,520 to average £920 and feeding bulls sold to £1,580.

In the breeding section cows with calves peaked at £2,450 for a pure Limousin outfit with commercials to £1,220 for Angus crosses.

There was a good solid entry of 138 finished cattle with the best on offer to 326p and £2,489 per head.  There were 57 heifers which averaged 280.5 pence indicating a decent trade right through.

Thinking about sending finished or OTM cattle to Bakewell? Do not hesitate to have a word with Oliver Hiles on 07801 530899.

The same story in the OTM department.  90 head forward, a few less than last week.  Top figures 270p and £2,900.

The average looked good at 185.4 pence.

Just 27 calves on offer with Bulls to £372 and heifers £255.

In the sheep department there were 942 lambs on offer with trade solid throughout the sale.  Top figures 342p/kg and £235.85 per head.

The SQQ was 305.6p, back a little on the week.

It remains to be seen how this figure compares with centres, but Bakewell has put in a good performance in recent weeks.

Cull ewes not plentiful with only 227 on offer.  Trade still very good with the best to £178 and the average a solid £122.03.

Thoughts now starting to turn to the Autumn sales our fixture list is as follows:
