Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 22nd July

Despite ‘haymaking’ weather over recent days we still ended up with 575 cattle and 1,117 sheep at Bakewell with decent prices reported from all sections.

There was a seasonable entry of 253 store & breeding cattle and a right royal trade throughout the sale.

Finishers had to work even harder than usual to secure stock to top up their yards.  Steers peaked at £1,890 with a record average of precisely £1,200 which demonstrated the quality of cattle and the strength of demand.  Heifers topped at £1,650 and that average at £1,041 is also one for the record books. Feeding bulls reached £1,560 to average £975.

In the breeding department cows and calves sold to £1,800 with Lim stock bulls to £2,850.

There was an excellent turnout of 164 finished cattle keeping the market busy at what is often a quite time of year.

Top figures 331p/kg and £2,307 per head.  The average for the 78 heifers was a solid 282.7 pence. A good result all round.

110 OTM cattle on parade with top figures 256p and £2,750.  The average looked good at 181.0 pence.

A few more calves about with 48 forward and plenty of interest.  Bulls sold to £460 and heifers £365.

Over in the sheep shed there were 767 lambs.  Top figures 342p and £157.86 per head.

The SQQ ended up at a respectable 291.2 pence.

There were 335 cull sheep with ewes to £190 to average a creditable £114.44.
