Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-07-29

Given the excellent harvesting conditions there was a brilliant entry of stock in all departments with a total of 628 cattle and 1232 sheep on offer.

Trade in the cattle shed as hot as the weather with Oliver reporting both finished cattle and OTM’s keenly sought after for all types on offer.

The finished cattle totalled 144 head and saw bulls to 330p/kg and £2478 per head.  Steers to 325p/kg and £2368 and heifers to 331p/kg and £2079.

OTM’s even dearer on the week for a smaller entry of 69 grossing a top of £1955 and 245p/kg.

An increased entry of store cattle totalling 377 head with a nice entry of cows and calves attracting strong interest to £2780.

Interest in the store cattle followed the same theme with all sizes and ages just as dear as last week and with the entry of younger types looking particularly well sold.  Bulls topped at £1510, heifers at £1665 and steers at £1820.  An overall average per head including a number of weanlings to a very respectable £1033 per head.

A Smaller entry of calves with trade reported as dearer than ever with bulls to £470 and heifers to £425.

The entry of 1232 sheep comprised 915 lambs and 307 ewes, lamb trade very similar to last week with tops of 330pkg and £158 per head.  The average returned at 295.76p/kg and £125.50 per head, whilst ewes topped at £213 to average just over £123.
