Bakewell Market Report 2024-07-29
Given the excellent harvesting conditions there was a brilliant entry of stock in all departments with a total of 628 cattle and 1232 sheep on offer.
Trade in the cattle shed as hot as the weather with Oliver reporting both finished cattle and OTM’s keenly sought after for all types on offer.
The finished cattle totalled 144 head and saw bulls to 330p/kg and £2478 per head. Steers to 325p/kg and £2368 and heifers to 331p/kg and £2079.
OTM’s even dearer on the week for a smaller entry of 69 grossing a top of £1955 and 245p/kg.
An increased entry of store cattle totalling 377 head with a nice entry of cows and calves attracting strong interest to £2780.
Interest in the store cattle followed the same theme with all sizes and ages just as dear as last week and with the entry of younger types looking particularly well sold. Bulls topped at £1510, heifers at £1665 and steers at £1820. An overall average per head including a number of weanlings to a very respectable £1033 per head.
A Smaller entry of calves with trade reported as dearer than ever with bulls to £470 and heifers to £425.
The entry of 1232 sheep comprised 915 lambs and 307 ewes, lamb trade very similar to last week with tops of 330pkg and £158 per head. The average returned at 295.76p/kg and £125.50 per head, whilst ewes topped at £213 to average just over £123.

Less on offer with a scorching hot day outside and plenty of field work to do on farms. Cows on fire and dearer on the week with all the regulars working hard but nowhere near enough cows to buy. The average is about 25 pence dearer on the year which equals to £150/cow year on year. Top call today was 245p for a young B Blue x heifer from S & M Boam with top cow being a pure Blue at 242p (£1926) from Mark Froggatt, Blithbury. Not as many best cows on offer but those that were there 190p plus, which is unreal for the time of year.

Prices peaked at 325p (£2073) for one of a lovely run from Belper Skip Hire, with the Wells family at 321p with weight up to £2368.80 twice for Jack Blackshaw and Mark Hambleton. B/W’s to 231p.

Less heifers than steers and a solid price with butchers looking for plums amongst the offering. Alex Townroe rose to the top this week with his posh handy weighted B Blue x at 331p (£1926) and selling to big Dave on behalf of Meakin Bros, Leek. Mark Froggatt had 330p with Peter Gaunt up to 328p (£2079) for weighted Limmys. 4 B/W heifers in the entry today had their effect on the averages.

I think trade possibly the dearest I have seen and any amount more could have been sold to vendors advantage, with a multitude of potential purchasers present for all types.
Continental bulls saw Limousins to £470 and B Blues to £465, whilst the native breeds looked equally as well sold with Angus to £325 and Hereford to £310.
A similar story for the heifers with continentals seeing Simmentals to £425 and B Blues to £320 and of the natives seeing Herefords to £290 and Angus to £250.

Despite a good harvest day still a very good entry of 1232 sheep including 925 lambs. Demand very good especially for the heavier weights with several pens of these grossing over £150/head to peak at £158.52 and 330p/kg. The overall average 294.47p/kg up 3p/kg on last week.

307 Cull Sheep
Generally, the best continental types dearer on the week with strong Mules over £130, but this particular commodity probably a little harder to sell.
Customers around for all the best to a top of £213 for the Furness family at Monyash with Texels and continentals.
Plenty of good long meated continentals over £160 with the best 9 lots averaging £191.10. Spirited bidding for the meated Swales to over £80/head.
Very few rams with no particular big weighted sorts available. Top price £140 for a Texel.
