Bakewell Market Report 02-09-2024

A bumper market following the Bank Holiday week with large entries in all departments.

A total of 841 cattle and 1,845 sheep on offer consigned by a total of 239 vendors.

The store & breeding cattle section was particularly busy.  Trade remains at an all time high level with new buyers operating and some remarkable prices achieved.

Steers sold to £2,070 with heifers to £1,790 and feeding bulls £1,580.

In the breeding section cows and calves sold to £2,100 and a 6 year old Angus bull made £2,200.

In the finished cattle department there was a decent entry of 145 head.  Top figures 342p/kg and £2,566 per head.

The average for the 66 heifers was a solid 287.9 pence.

Cull cow numbers were good at 102 with a storming trade reported.

Top figures 266p and £2,061 per head.

The average was a very respectable 184.8 pence.

Bakewell calf department seems to be attracting some better numbers with 62 this week.  Hardly surprising with both bull and heifer calves hitting £500.

In the sheep shed there was useful show of 1,390 lambs with vendors eager to sell in advance of the theave sale on Friday.

Top figures 342p and £179.40 with the SQQ at a healthy 290.0p.

Cull sheep out in force with 443 on offer, ewes to £204 with the average £113.81.

A corking good trade again and dearer on the fortnight with the fridges in the shops empty, the buyers had to work hard for the sample.  27 heifers (41% of the entry) sold over 300p with a couple of corkers from the Wells family at 342p and a run of heavys from Peter Gaunt 322-333p/kg.  7 Herefords to 290p, 6 Angus to 286p, Belted Galloways to 286p as well as 2 Holstein non breeders in the entry.

A massive entry of 532 store & breeding cattle attracted a packed ring of buyers and prices appear to have lifted another notch.

Steers sold to £2070 with a remarkable average of £1286 with heifers to £1790 and feeding bulls £1580.

Trade stayed strong from first to last and there were buyers present for all categories.

A very large entry for the time of year, but trade soaked up the numbers with prices beyond all expectations.

Angus and Hereford crosses were keenly sought as were the B/W’s – rapidly becoming a rare breed in the steer department.

There were all sorts and sizes on offer with a good many small cattle within the early part of the sale, which made the overall average even more remarkable.

A very good entry of 443 cull ewes and rams saw plenty of grazing buyers forward and resulting trade very brisk throughout.  Best pure Texel ewes to £204 with Texel x Mules to £175, Suffolks to £170, Mules to £130 and horned ewes to £107.
