Bakewell Market Report 2024-09-09

Big numbers of stock on the move again with 965 cattle and 1,804 sheep on offer from 279 vendors.

Solid trade reported in all departments with cattle generally very dear and sheep a shade easier.

Another massive entry of 560 store and breeding cattle with trade much as we have seen in recent weeks.

The special entry of Simmental cattle from Storer Smith Simmentals attracted plenty of interest with cow and calf outfits to £2,550, in calf cows to £1,950 and maiden heifers to £1,580.

Amongst the regular store cattle steers sold to £1,850, heifers £1,850 and feeding bulls £1,420.

A good show of finished cattle with a total of 157 on offer, top figures 348p and £2,428. The average for the 73 heifers was a creditable 286.7 pence equalling to £1,719 per head.

A large entry of 1478 OTM and feeding cows with top figures 252p and £2,441 per head.  The average a shade up at 180.7 pence.

Bakewell calf numbers hit 100 for the first time in a good while, bulls to £520 and heifers to £405.

In the sheep section there was a substantial entry of 1,452 lambs with trade generally easier.

Top figures 330p and £160.32 per head.

The SQQ was 273.4 pence.

A massive show today from 73 vendors from the Peak District and surrounding counties sold to a full line up of 14 different buyers at ringside.  Cows are very dear at present with the overall average some 15 pence dearer than this time last year due to the demand for meat.  Best sorts easily over 200 pence with the younger fleshed sorts over 220p.  Top call today was a 1 calf, 3 ½ year old Limmy for Messrs Mycock, Friden at 252p (£1980) with a run of OTM clean heifers from Henry Holland 236-246p (up to £1726).  The trade is hot, give me a call for any advice on marketing your OTM cattle on 07801 530899.

Best continental bulls saw B Blues to £520, Lim to £470, Hfd to £355 and the overall highlight being a Friesian Bull at £322.

A similar story for the heifers with B Blues to £405, Lim to £355 and Simmental to £350.

A small entry of older Limousin bulls saw plenty of interest to £550.

A total entry of 1804 sheep included a larger show of 1452 lambs.  The meated heavy lambs continued to be in demand with a top of 330p/kg and a top gross of over £160/head with the overall average only back £3/head on last week.  The best butchers lambs peaked at 329p/kg, light weights to 326p/kg, heavy weights to 330p/kg and over weight breaking lambs to 307p/kg.  Overall average 275.63p/kg.

A slightly smaller entry of 352 cull ewes and rams saw numerous grazing buyers operating.  Best pure continental ewes in short supply with a top of £170/head with Suffolks to £140, Texel x Mules to £148.  Mules sold in the £85-£95 bracket.
